Hi there
Why anybody these days on Windows 10 (HOME users not Enterprise / Office type workplaces) needs to install ANY 3rd party A/V software is a total mystery to me.
The days for that type of software were back in the dying days of C20 when Windows was as leaky as a sieve and hackers abounded.
Today Windows defender is built on the extremely robust Enterprise strength security built in to Ms's hugely used and very successful AZURE cloud system. Also nobody is interested in hacking "Mom and Pop" computers any more for a miserable few dollars -- name of the game is identity theft, bank / e-commerce fraud etc etc -- these can't be stopped with conventional Anti Virus software -- you need Human Brain -- and eventually some sort of A.I might help - but that development is quite a few years off yet.
I often ask people what do 3rd party A/V products detect that WD doesn't - especially if you ignore the false positives -- which is a real pain in itself to determine whether implied threat is real or otherwise.
I haven't used any A/V product since W7 other than WD and haven't had any problem with Viruses etc etc -- and I've visited loads of sites that shouldn't be mentioned here too.

You probably heard of all kinds of perils people allow themselves to fall in ? With some people even 10 AVs and other anti malware programs would not be enough. People knowing enough don't need as much but there are certain circumstances when some more layers are helpful. I used to evaluate a lot of SW from largely unknown authors and could never be sure what else would be in there. Used Sandboxee for some but not all would work in there.
It has done since at least version 1703 if you went into the registry to turn it on (which I had done). New for 2004 is that a switch is now available in Windows Security.
Enable or Disable Microsoft Defender PUA Protection in Windows 10
Hi there
Thanks for pointing that out -- I'll bet loads of people still don't know that --- often when I post saying 3rd party A/V programs for Windows for Home computers is 100% unnecessary these days on W10 - some people say "I install XXX because they find PUPS".
W10 as you say has been doing this for ages now -- and it's even easier - no registry setting necessary either any more.
Cheers

I didn't know that myself. Just optioned that feature on . Thanks !
Just an after thought. I wonder why MS doesn't option this on at install ? Is there any downside to this feature ?
They don't, but after installing 2004 I did get one of those yellow warning triangles in Defender on the taskbar. On opening it MS recommended turning on PUA protection.
The only downside is if you actually want one of the Potentially Unwanted Applications with poor reputations, but then you could always add it as an exception.
