That's not so true these days with modern HYPERVISORS for example-- ESXI, KVM/QEMU, XEN and HYPER-V. The real hardware can be passed thru to VM's built using these hypervisors so you are essentially using the Native OS hardware and drivers rather than "paravirtualised ones" as is used in VMWare and VBOX. The HYPERVISOR is essentially a very tiny OS loader and it's possible with the right mix to get around 99% of Native performance on VM's.

With this type of performance you can test pretty well all the hardware you need -- even intense gaming gpu's for graphics.

Of course if you pass thru say graphic cards or other hardware then that has to be dedicated to the VM and therefore isn't available to the Host while the VM is powered on. This means for example you will have to have 2 graphics cards or ports on the Host but in theory this shouldn't stop you.

Some mobos also allow a basic vga output as well as a graphics card so even if you only have 1 dedicated graphics card provided there's a VGA output you can run a CLI (command line) via console mode for the host (at least on a Linux Host you can run headless anyway).

Another solution is to logon and control the VM from a remote computer (can be on a LAN of course).

VM's these days can most certainly be used for decent hardware testing provided your Host fits the requirements. A lot of modern hardware is actually tested this way believe it or not -- and most cloud systems are built by Virtual Infrastructure -- those people running for example STEAM -- most of those servers are hosted by Virtual servers !!!

Point taken. It does require the hardware and software to do it.

Thanks -- now installed it (as a VM).

Finally that problem seems to be fixed !!!! (until the next build !!)
I've just tried this on a VM --working OK this time !!

done it again up to 47% install then starts downloading again installed this time
now when shutting lap down keep getting update and restart
that 3 times so far
everything else seams to be working

You know, come to think of it, I think I did receive that CU on May 12 which would have been a Friday. In any event, this time was very unexpected and I rebooted while a backup operation was still going on (the program completed but the backup was corrupted).

Thing is only this last update showed up in update history

I think I found a bug in the Backgound picture settings. I have it set to Slideshow pointing to a picture folder stored on OneDrive and the setting has changed back to the default settings twice. I'm guessing that it's either a problem with this build or with OneDrive.

Hi folks

after 3 days of running OK - Windows Networking is totally hosed again for me on this build .

Cannot access NAS from Windows -- never mind about SAMBA -- even filezilla doesn't work --sftp / openssh fails

Reverted back to the standard build.

Bad one Ms -- that's about 3 / 4 attempts with Networking on these fast ring builds -- OK I expect some defects bit not this endless round and round we go with Windows Networking.

How bog standard HOME users handle this for just basic file shares to NAS etc I've no idea -- nearly everybody at home is streaming / sharing files around these days to play on remote TV / ROKU / KODI / AMAZON boxes etc.

I haven't got any more patience with this stuff any more -it's just Wack-a-Mole over and over again.

Don't M/s ever test their offerings with Non Windows networks !!!

Still the good thing about all these problems is that it will make businesses a lot less eager to offshore everything to cheap countries like India (Banglahore), Pakistan, Vietnam etc) --I've always said as others -- "You get what you pay for--" --Pay people peanuts and you get monkeys.

At least you can say like the Brits do with their Football (Soccer) .. "Football 's coming Home" -- now finally after years of bad service we can sing aloud : - "I.T's finally coming Home" ... !!!!
