I tried MANY proposed solutions from around the net, but ended up reinstalling Windows altogether and losing some data.
Needless to say I am pissed.

Check out Macrium (free) and create images of your working OS. Any future disaster and it's simply a matter of restoring that image in a few minutes. Plenty of tutorials on this forum.

Sorry to hear you lost some of your data. I agree with Fabler2. Macrium Reflect free and a external drive can help to restore your system in disasters like that. Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Especially as the Insiders Program is a testing channel.

Agree completely with the Macrium suggestions, but......... at the very least you could have copied your data somewhere else prior to a clean install and blowing it away. Unless I am missing something.... don't think I am.

Turned out ok for me in the end but the offline phase was very slow and often seemed stuck with little activity. The temptation to shut it down was great.

Insider OS is unpredictable sometimes. You shouldn't be mixing it with any of your data.
A lot of us here actually have it installed on a separate drive. Otherwise, a Macrium image will always save your day.

Or have it installed in a VM. Much less stressful.

After a few restarts my desktop made it to 90% and stayed there well over a hour. I hit the restart and let it roll back. UUPDump took 40 minutes total. So far I haven't seen any new or major problems.
