Why is this treated as a Feature Update?

My theory is that when MS decided to make the C/D updates optional they didn't have a third tag available to distinguish optional Quality updates from the mandatory Patch Tuesday ones. So rather that redesigning the update servers from scratch they tagged them as Feature updates. The unfortunate side-effect is that they don't get seen by windows update if you have set a defer period for Feature updates.

    2020-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4550945):

Why is this treated as a Feature Update?

Had Feature Updates paused for 15 days. No WU.
Turned Feature Updates on, WU started KB4550945 immediate download and install.

Feature update means it's not a security update I think.

Did 3 desktops and a laptop -- no issues.

So when did Cumulative Updates become Feature Updates?

Now I can't properly defer Feature Updates, since it would appear that Cumulative Updates are under that. Same on three other systems.

Microsoft has to get this sorted!

Only the optional C/D non-security cumulative updates are treated as Feature updates. That is so that they will not be installed automatically, like an optional Feature update you have to click 'download and install now'. The Patch Tuesday cumulative update is always tagged as a Quality update and will not be affected by your 'defer feature update' settings, only by your 'defer quality update' period (if any).

OK, got it. However, the casual user will not.

    Thanks!

It's just the optional C/D updates. The B update on Patch Tuesday rolls them in anyway.

I always put my updates on a 7 day pause Sundays when leaving out of town for work. Will this stop all of them (only worried about auto reboots) ?

Freudian slip? Or did you mean the CASUAL user (as I'm sure you did)
