That completely depends on you hardware and software configuration. An educated guess is everything between 30minutes and 8h...

updates previous to this took about 30 minutes. So it might take 1 hour. because there are lots of things in it.

and this feature update is not generally available in windows update and security sectiom.
Microsoft says it will be 30th may, 2020. Before they said, it will be 10 may 2020 bla, bla,..

My experience. Anywhere up to several hours for the online part depending on your specs. The offline phase 15 minutes max.

    Hi there

To me the whole idea that it takes several HOURS to update / install a CONSUMER BASED OS on reasonable --even quite old equipment is just plain Bonkers.

I think in the old days (circa 1970's) System programmers could install (I think it was called System Generation back then) a complete MVS (old IBM mainframe OS) system together with loads of applications and TSO (for online use although in those days there wasn't Internet browsing on these systems) in around 3 - 4 hours --this also included compiling many modules -- adding user mods, applying updates etc.

This puts installing a Windows system on equipment that is actually far more powerful than those mainframes believe it or not -- even a lowly Intel Celeron probably has the processing power of an old IBM / AMDAHL 3033 type of mainframe !!!!

Most Linux distros can be installed in around 10 - 15 mins -- so Windows IMO needs to up its game considerably here -- at least for typical basic machines that don't have weird and wonderful hardware on them .

I've usually found though installing / updating windows doesn't actually take that long so what on earth people have got on their machines that it can take 8 hours for an update is just to me absolutely astonishing. (I'm assuming you have Internet connections also better than a 2400 BAUD HAYES Modem or you aren't using one of these !!!

A lot of factors to take into consideration when it comes to the time it will take to download the upcoming FU (2004): Hardware configuration, the bandwidth allocated by one's ISP for delivery optimization and so on...I am pretty sure the download's length of time is going to be different from one PC to another, as well as from one user to another.

Version 2004 brings a new option to throttle the bandwidth used by Delivery Optimization as an absolute value. You can set this separately for Foreground downloads (downloads that you initiate from Windows Store for example) or background downloads. You can access this option via Settings > Update & Security > Delivery Optimization > Advanced Options
Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020) update all new features & changes

    ---updated---

And I would add the the link provided by @Brink below in post #255 on how to throttle the download for delivery optimization: "New download throttling options for Delivery Optimization"

What is new in Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1)

Correct me if I am wrong. My understanding of the MS version changes was that some things were changed while others remained in place and reused. Is that the case or will the 20H1 version be an entirely new build nothing from the old reused ?

Does my question make sense ?

    Yes, it does make sense.

Microsoft now use the Unified Update Platform (UUP) to perform a major Feature Update through windows update, such as the 2004 update will be. It's not so much a case that "some things were changed while others remained in place and reused", it's more that when there are few differences between a current system file and its replacement a small 'delta' patch is downloaded and the new system file is created from the old one by applying the patch.

    Microsoft said:
...one of the biggest benefits UUP brings to our customers is a reduction in download size of build updates on PCs.... Differential download packages rely on re-using files on your current OS to reconstruct the newer OS. This could include copying files as-is that have not changed between builds, or it could involve applying “binary deltas”¯ or “diffs”¯ to old files to generate newer files. Differential download packages are smaller and can take a shorter amount of time to download.

.....as we roll out UUP in our retail release, users can expect their download size to decrease by approximately 35% when going from one major update of Windows to another...
An update on Unified Update Platform (UUP) for Windows 10

That 35% reduction in download is only seen if you let Windows Update install the Feature update. If you use the MCT to download the ISO you will always download the full install package with complete copies of all the files.

The downside of letting windows update and UUP do the feature update is that all this applying of patches takes a lot of processing time and can make the upgrade much longer that upgrading using the ISO, despite the download being smaller. When 1903 was released I compared the time both methods took.

How long does the 1903 upgrade take using Windows Update?
