You can test for the crash by creating a new text file and rename it as Filename..txt with a double dot before the extension. Open the text file and type something (anything will do) then save it. Now right-click on it and scan with Defender.

Once you have crashed the Defender service, it can only be restarted from Services.

Same Windows Defender Issue here and was really worried but no other Program (MWB + all it's offshoot programs etc) I tried found anything , even did a Macrium restore and still the same Issue ......but I do remember renaming a file this afternoon accidently with a double .. , while reading this thread since I thought it was the CU ( I should of read it backwards :) ) windows update downloaded the Latest Definition and fixed it ....so that's a couple of hours I won't get back , but thanks to everyone here for posting about the Windows Defender Issue, I at least feel "Ok" now that I don't have a PUA or a Rootkit or something ....

** And thanks for the link to the M$ Safety Scanner Bree , was not aware of it , but good to have another Tool in the toolbox.
