This was an emergency patch for a possible threat from 3 weeks ago.

Totally ridiculous: Well over an hour for the first attempt, which reached 100% install and failed. I then tried again, at 1523 local; it is now 1627 install has reached 18% where it has been for some length of time, computer is very slow, with only some 19% CPU and 48% memory used.

If I thought it would help, I would restart, but that might cause serious problems, so I guess all I can do is wait. If the second try finally fails, I won't try to update again, just wait for the system to try. I don't know what I shall do if nothing happens, such as the install continuing to (apparently) stick at 18%.

Ooh, goody, all of 19%!

1644: Time to restart! It helps to get the update's attention by insulting it.....

SMB something.

"Server Message Block." SMB is a network protocol used by Windows-based computers that allows systems within the same network to share files.

I believe CountMike is correct, I thiink it had something to do with this...
