    Hi folks
I hate those things -- not a Mobile phone --BUT if they work and some people like them OK. These days it should be about USER CHOICE.

Actually if you like those sorts of things the peak of that development was probably with the much criticized VISTA OS with the gadgets.

Any decent Engineer will swear by one of the best Engineering rules ever devised : "If it ain't broke --Don't Fix it".

jimbo, you took the words right out of my mouth!

While I'm not a 'Live Tile' fan either - just too much of a distraction - I totally understand those that do as a kind of Gadget Lite.

I loved my Gadgets in Vista and 7, having that RAM meter quickly diagnose that my 'free' subscription to McAfee was eating the lunch of a new computer's memory's every 3 days.

So when I'd read ahead that Microsoft was doing away with them in the Windows 10 Giveaway of July 2015, I purposely went looking 6 months in advance for a replacement, one that allowed for a seamless transition when it happened.

My point - Windows, as much as I'm fan, has this ugly history of taking away what works and replacing it with less than or nothing, and is one reason I've consistently looked for standalone 3rd party solutions to Window's utilities that can remain staples to my productivity regardless of the capriciousness of Microsoft's view of my future.

Well that felt good to get off my chest.. ;o)

I don't understand this obsession with the start menu, I go days maybe even weeks without clicking it, everything I need is either pinned to the taskbar or I can get from the search box, I only ever use the start menu to shut down or reboot.

    Hi there

Problem is sometimes for complex applications one does need cascading type menus -- for instance some of the stuff one can do in photoshop or some 3-D CAD Engineering stuff or even Stock Market analysis and trading platforms -- you don't always start these things from the "Initial.exe" file but need to navigate through sub menus or even more nested / cascaded levels.

Otherwise I agree a lot of things can be run directly pinned to task bar or via search box - so the menu as it stands currently isn't ideal at all. Maybe more customiseable toolbars etc.

    Cheers

In a few years we'll be back to a traditional sensible GUI.

Me too. It took me ages to realise what a 'live tile' actually was. It appears I have only one - my photo gallery changes the image occasionally. Apart from that it makes no difference to my use of 10. The first thing I do actually remove is cortana; waste of space and bytes; I have the good old search box, much easier.

There are 2 types of users.

Those who like Windows as a toy
Those who like Windows as a work tool

    Both have different expectations.
