Optional Driver updates only available with Windows 10 Version 20H1/2004 or greater
one of the comments on that blog said:
The changes to Ux for Windows 10 20H1 detailed here will not be backported to previous releases. For older versions of Windows Manual drivers are obtained via Device Manager (same as Optional drivers were).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the blog post is from Microsoft, speaking to driver providers (HP, Dell, Intel, Conexant, Realtek, Synaptics, etc, etc) and addressing them as partners, saying
And yes, later the article, almost begrudgingly, describes the "Manual" option, as such:All partners will now be able to publish drivers as automatic!
And "the new Windows Update UX" as it calls it is the new "Optional updates" feature of Windows 10 updates that users will see. If I am reading this all correctly. The “Manual” delivery option requires the publisher to specifically choose it and explain the business justification for the choice. The drivers that are submitted through the “Manual” path will be offered to applicable machines through the new Windows Update UX.
So while "Optional Updates" are "good for us" as far as it goes, it seems this post from MS is specifically steering driver manufacturers away from optional towards automatic/critical and that seems "bad for us." As in the same way it's always been in Windows 10.
Or am I missing something?
Thanks so much Brink, when I did the 2004 Win 10 update my Video driver was replaced by a year old one from MS. I had heaps of trouble getting rid of it and putting the Nvidia one back on.
