Why not take a shot at the Microsoft Update Catalog after making a system image backup (maybe you already have a recent one). The reason is that if there is some compatibility issue with your machine, the update even though an optional one might not be offered to you. With the download from MUC, at least if what I am saying is true, you will probably have an error message or not. Just saying!

I received this update automatically. I'm not even sure when and if my computer ever got rebooted.
Pretty sure it must've done - all mine have been done interactively and for each a restart was requested.
Presumably you don't need to log in to yours? All mine require a password on restart.
You can, of course look in the System Event Viewer to see when the last Kernel-General and Kernel-Boot events occurred.

Everything appeared to install fine but once the machine started my synaptic fingerprint scanner would not work. I ended up uninstalling it and reinstalling and it worked fine after that.
However, I can't read any SDcard that I attach to my USB port. Standard USB drives appear to work fine. When a SD card is attached the whole machine slows to a crawl and explorer and other programs stop responding.
Looks like I'm going to have to remove the update and see if it starts working again.

Uninstalled both and the problem is still there, although I am able to access some SD cards. The issue may be related to several bad SD cards that I just happened to pick, what are the chances
I am reinstalling the updates to confirm that they are not the issue.

Reinstalled both updates and everything is working fine. Only 1 SD card is not reading. I assume that it must be a card issue.

Yes - I have done that before (Infact I already downloaded it, but not installed). But after running a "SFC /scannow" It has errors that it can't repair. Below is a snipit of error in question.

Need to run SFC again.
Not sure if this applies in this case, but I've had SFC corruption trouble with any Window supplied *.lnk whenever I've changed the icon under properties.
