Not everything in print is necessarily the true facts.
I appreciate that but as someone just getting into using W10 seriously I can only react to the stuff I've been able to look up in my limited free time. And let's face it, complaints about the "spying"/telemetry aspect of Win 10 is hardly isolated to a minute percentage of the relevant websites, so it did seem to have some credibility; on the face of it at least. Obviously Gurus/Gold Members like yourselves will have a much better idea, and you're the types I tend to pay attention to

    Hi there
store media files on a "Non Windows NAS" -- also if you have long path and file names >266 chars Ms would only get a "garbled" list in any case !!!!

I'm not sure about typed text -- just think --that would give Ms every password to every online users bank accounts -- I'm sure if that were true it would have been out on the net long before now.

You have to really query where some of those magazines get their info from -- If Ms really did this -- apart from breaking almost every data protection act on the planet you could easily check by making a "freedom of Information" inquiry applicable in most democracies.

    Excessive Paranoia IMO.

    Cheers

I use VM to test out Linux distros, but, my win7 drive has software on it that took ages to install (85gb) and more importantly to tweak and configure it's sweet spot, I don't want to do that again if I don't have too.....
You don't have to redo anything....convert the W7 disk and installed software to a VHD, then mount as a virtual system in W10.

Hyper-V - Create and Use VHD of Windows 10 with Disk2VHD

Don't be fooled by the title....tutorial works with Windows XP and onwards.

Windows 10 has made me feel like I'm simply renting my machine from ms. Anyways, I use this to help make their spying a bit more difficult.

Should You Disable Windows 10 Telemetry? - Smart Buyer
So what exactly does Microsoft capture and transmit, and how often? According to InvestmentWatch, Windows 10 transmits the following data back to the company:

    • Typed text on keyboard sent every 30 minutes
    • Transmits anything you say into a microphone
    • Transcripts of things you say while using Cortana
    • Index of all media files on your computer
    • When your webcam is first enabled, 35mb of data
    • Telemetry data

the red bits are what concern me.
In Windows 10, use Diagnostic data viewer to find what is sent. I didn't find any privacy infringing stuff getting sent to them. Also, read this: 5 popular Windows 10 settings tweaks you need to quit using | ZDNet

Well your machine - no. But you're OS; yes in a way. But it's always been that way. As I wrote earlier in this thread ....

The major issue is that users (especially power users) misinterpret the agreement of terms that are in place with a software license. You never EVER own your copy of the software - you simply have been granted a license to use if under the terms set out by the Microsoft EULA. It's their software. When they want to withdraw support, change how a feature works, or stop a certain program from being used in a certain way under their OS, they can make those changes. It's actually ALWAYS been this way, but now, software companies can enforce the agreement.
