Windows 10 Insider Preview Fast Build 19541 - January 8

Hi there
@f14tomcat -- changing VMWare VDISK to SATA from SCSI worked !!! however I'm now only using VMWare if all else fails on VM's.
BTW no problem (at least I haven't yet) had any problems Hot plugging USB devices on my VM (QEMU/KVM) -- Windows picks them up with no problem -- currently backing up new installation !!

Only 1 very minor defect -- I get an unrecognised device if I try and connect an SSD to the VM when the SSD is connected to the machine via a SATA==>USB3 adapter -- the device manager shows SABRENT->USB device needs a driver. No such animal though for Windows !!!. Devices in the config are hardware passthru.
However if I just Hotplug the thing without adding it to the VM config Windows sees it a Disk drive as the Host has the necessary driver in it. !!! Strange etc -- so be careful if using passthru of physical hardware to the VM. Not a prob with VMWare but could be in HYPER-V. To remove simply use the Windows remove hardware -- no problems there either. Device will get re-attached to HOST automatically again.
Being able without problem also to boot physical USB devices from inside the VM is a great feature as well --not possible on VMWare yet I believe.
So far can't break anything on this release --- !!!!! (yet !)

Hi there @
Dagen
Try and use the iso from UUPDUMP -- download the script, extract and run it. Then run the setup.exe to either install from scratch or update.
(I'd backup exiting system first of course -- Macrium is a good program for that purpose --the free edition is 100% bgood enough for taking windows system image backups).
Cheers

Thanks for the info but still fails, now with the message: install failed during SAFE_OS because during MIGRATE_DATA error accured. So is this something that I can try to fix or will i have to wait until MS fixes this? I can live with 19041 build, its the last one that installs on my laptop :)

Hi there
Some machines just resolutely don't want to install this stuff for some obscure reason --until Ms supplies a fix / workaround I'd wait -- or you could go the route I've done --try and install as a VM on a Linux Host. Warning --once you start messing with VM's it gets very addictive so you'd better have a lot of spare time !!!!!!!.

Dagen..... shot in the dark.
If on, turn off Fast Startup, and in BIOS disable Secure Boot.

Thanks I'll try that but if that fails too then i'll wait for MS to fix it. Not starting to messing around with VM's

Still failing. Have to wait a real fix. Thanks anyways!

Which version are you updating FROM? I remember an issue a few builds back where if you restored a version 2-3 back and updated from that, it worked. Don't recall the details.

19041. Previous build failed too so i skipped that. I could try earlier version since i have some spare time now :)

Started 19541 around midnight last night/this morning.
Download and installation went without a hitch. I'm working on the Fast Ring preview right now.

I think I remember part of the scenario. 19036 was screwy. Going back to 19031 (I think) and updating was the trick.

Well they are quite pretty Keith
Keith, why does your sig keep taking pics of me

Y'know, with all the "tinfoil hats" out there, if they saw Keith's Sig, they'd go nutso!
