Windows 10 Insider Preview Fast Build 19541 - January 8
-
I am now successfully multibooting with 5 Operating Systems each have ~250GB disk space. Windows Insider Fast Ring (for myself I see no point in installing any other Windows build, I am also using a 2 TB software RAID 0 device for storage), Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa) (I am using this distro's pretty Ubuntu Studio Grub menu altho with my mobo I can boot into any OS <sorta>, Fedora Rawhide and my latest openSUSE Tumbleweed. The Linux distros are running kernel 5.5rc6. After 20 years I'm sorta getting a handle on this although this is the first time I've used two SSD's.
Cheers
Hi there
Running only VM's now all on QEMU (kernel 5.4.11 -- arch updates pretty regularly). Fixed the UEFI VM boot via installing OVMF so you get at VM creation option for UEFI or MBR (switch off the secured boot in the VM Bios though). USB redirection working perfectly as well too.
Now experimenting with adding a 2nd graphics card to the Mobo to enable graphics PCI passthru.
I still need one on the Host Linux system until I don't need the GUI any more -- there's also a limited VGA builtin in one (you can use built in plus graphics card(s) on this mobo).
Only problem with the VGA port is I don't have one of those old fashioned VGA connectors on any monitor and also while messing about it's much easier testing on the local machine than SSH or remote access using a laptop.
Native fast sata card will be my next thing and I have 2 ethernet ports on my mobo so can also try different subnets.
After that I'm going to try a trial version of a Windows server (friends in "Low places" at work !!!) to see If I can get some sort of Windows desktop VDI working).
My aim is to have a Windows VM that operates pretty well as near "Bare Metal speed" as possible and replicate a work type environment as closely as possible.

I'm still waiting on VMware 16 which will likely play nice with (on more accuracy on) Hyper-V. I got a fairly good deal using Honey on my upgrade to VMware 15 and am hoping for the same.

Hi there
Stupid Mobo actually has two graphic DVI output ports (got DVI-HDMI adpters so no issue there --sound also works via HDMI) so pci test works just fine !!!
!
only I silly issue -- can't get an SSD attached via a SATA-->USB3 adapter to work on the VM -- it sort of wants a driver (non existent) -- although no problems on the Host. I think though with the SATA pci extra card assigned to windows via passthru that will no longer be an issue
So finally JOB DONE !!!!! (UEFI is fine too for VM's).
Now for Windows server and VDI !!! (I ought to get paid for doing this stuff !!!!!) at least my things work eventually. !!
I think too many people give up too easily -- they never had to use old stuff like punched cards / paper tape flexowriters etc etc. They really do have it easy today -- no google back then.
Win 10 UEFI VM UK Eng version latest build. (Glad VM EFI works because now I can restore some other VM's made with VMWARE using macrium and fix hardware after boot) !!

Cheers

It's R7 3700x on Asus prime x470 pro. Are you dual booting regular and insider versions on same disk ? Mine are on separate SSDs but still set up in dual BOOT and have separate MR backups for each. Didn't have any problems restoring each one separately.
I have one build on Fast ring, and one on the Slow ring, normally. And yes, they are on two different SSDs (EVO 960; FORCE MP600). HOWEVER, I finally found the culprit!!!
I cool my 3900X with a NZXT Kraken X72 360mm AIO. And it turns out that this coolers software called CAM, stops RM from initializing... Lol. Why can't our computers be smart enough to tell us something like that in plain language???? As I was rebuilding the other OS, after loading every three apps or so back to the sys, I'd try to start RM. And it would start every time, until I got to the NZXT software, which is normally one of the last things I add. Then I got the same old error message. So I deleted the CAM software, and RM started again perfectly. Then I reinstalled the CAM software, and checked to see if I had it installed, but just unloaded it from taskbar, could I start RM? And I could!!! So problem FINALLY solved, and sys restored to its blazingly fast operations. But this one had me on the ropes for quite a while...
Thanks again for sticking with me, and offering information to help me resolve this.

Hi thereI tried -- what you get is "You cant keep programs etc because you are running a newer version of Windows"So Restore is the only option --Not sure why that would be a problem in any case --surely people do backups before "upgrading". With sensible windows partition sizes and SSD's a backup / restore shouldn't take more than at the most 15 mins - probably less.

Yeah, the problem was every time I used the back up, the same problem appeared, which has me assuming it was something with the newer builds. That's why I was looking for another option. Turned out to be a software clash from my AIO cooler's software, which automatically updates itself. So I had not noticed the new update a few weeks back. Thanks.
