    Tony,
Thank you for the link to the forum. I read the thread and what a mess for you! One thought (which I think Saltgrass touched on in the forum) - have you tried downloading from the Microsoft Catalog and installing (if they will) each of the 19041/19042 builds in sequence (I would skip the preview builds because they are not a finalized build) that were released after your current .388, making sure to first install (before each build/update) any pre-requisites such as Servicing Stacks noted on the respective KB for each build? It looks like the next build is 19041/42.450 (KB4566782). You may also want to be sure .NET Framework is updated. I do not know this for sure but it occurred to me that, although monthly updates are said to be cumulative, there could be some bit of code in the updates after .388 that is preventing you from installing the later updates (e.g. KB4579311 and KB4586871) you tried and have failed. I noted you mention in the forum that you never enrolled in the Insiders Channel. For the heck of it you may want to double check your Insider settings:

Setting --> Update & Security --> Windows Insider Program (on the left panel)

I am not enrolled (and I have Diagnostic Feedback set to "Basic") and my screen looks like this:

Windows updates and KB info are here:

    .NET Framework is here:

Sure hope you find a solution other than the dreaded clean install.
    Cheers,
    Scott

    Tony,
Update on my end - I found the 1909 enablement update as a .cab file in a thread here by Brink. I followed his instructions to install it using a DISM command, two restarts later, and voilą 18363 is enabled! I empathize with your MS OS frustrations. I've wasted hours and hours over the years sorting out issues that should not be issues. Sadly, MS has yet to develop Win 10 as seamless and generally glitch free OS. May jump ship with my next machine. Hope my earlier message is of help. Good Luck! Cheers, Scott

    Thanks Scottr

That is one of the most cogent replies I have received!
Here is a screenshot regarding you own Insider screenshot. Just to get that on record.
I will have a look at your other ideas and comment later.

Regarding the KB4566782 I tried to get help with that in September as did others! Have a look at thie folloiwng thread.
(My wife died a few weeks later so I have not done more investigation until now as most of Win 10 still works.)

I agree with you about the "bits of code" possibility. I have also wondered about that.
I tried to get the Net Framework from the link you gave but the standalone install came up with "not applicable to your computer". I tried four different download descriptions and they all got the same result. I have the previous one installed already.

I had one idea sparked from your comments. According to the OS Build info on Settings, 20H2 was installed on 7th August. I see from my list of Programmes and Features via control panel that I installed several programmes within a few days after that date. It maybe that something in one of those is interfering. I must think about them in that context. But it cannot be an inherent fault as they all work OK on my old Lenovo PC which has quite happily installed 20H2 and all the extras ever since. Still dreadfully slow, but it/they all works.

Acer and Intel support desks try to be helpful but their buzzwordy type responses are never enough.

    Tony

PS Do you know of any article that describes in detail what happens after first switching on a brand new computer? How does it know that it needs to install Win 10 from scratch?; where does it find the install file?; where does it get the right (factory) device drivers from and how? I really need to understand what goes on!

Can you remember the message number in the thread you refer to where Brink gave instructions? I can't find it!
