    KB4517245 was a windows 10 killer for me.

    Apparently KB4517245 is an on switch and not an off switch.

    I have not been able to download the V1909 ISO.

    The ISO download site previously posted gives me 18362 and not 18363.

    The media creation tool gives me V1903.
    Chrome was able to download V1909 directly as an iPod, but but DISM states that it is V1903 even though the file name suggests V1909.

    Media Creation Tool will show you 1903 but when you install it, it is actually 1909 because the KB4517245 is included. Don't worry about it showing 18362..when you get into Windows it will be 18363 and version 1909

    I was in a hurry to leave when I initiated a shutdown..

    A popup came up and I was saying okay to the usual sequence of messages, however I realized belatedly that it was asking to update. Oh well, I probably needed to update from V1903 anyway, right?

    So I accidentally updated to V1909 or KB4517245 while shutting down.

    Windows 10 no longer works.

    1. The Taskbar search box is DOA and unusable. Weird.
    2. Cortana insists that I configure a microphone I do not have??? Weird.
    3. Edge closes shortly after opening. Weird.
    4. File Manager search no longer works. Weird.

    So far I do not have all the other standard recurring update issues as well, T.B.D.

    I will create posts addressing each of the 4 unsolved issues separately.

    Uninstalling KB4517245 did not switch it off? i.e. Things are still broken.
    I think its an activation patch, so once on always on?

    the only reliable way to check if you are really using 1909 (build 18363) is by running winver.exe

    Windows Update Error 0x80070424

    I upgraded, fresh install (option 2 from the installation app, erase app's preserve personal data), from v1803 to v1909 (OS Build 18363.476), to get rid of the completely intractable Windows Update Error 0x80070424.

    I, of course, am still getting the Windows Update Error 0x80070424. I've tried every one of the Microsoft Troubleshooters. I've created restore points and tested all the available registry edits that I could find online. Zero luck so far.

    ANY and ALL help at this point would be greatly appreciated. I'm contemplating a backup, wipe and install, after backing up all my drivers of course.

    As a side note I've contacted Microsoft directly and on the forums, and have received any helpful suggestions.

    Edit: Latest Windows Update Troubleshooter, downloaded directly from Microsoft, reports that it has fixed the errors. It has not, in fact, fixed anything.

    Edit: I think I have a clue as to part of the problem;

    Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 Nov. 2019 Update version 1909-windowsupdate-0x80070424.jpg

    I fixed the missing Windows Update Service with the following command;
    sc create wuauserv DisplayName= "Windows Update" binpath= "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs -p" Start= delayed-auto depend= RpcSs

    (Thanks to Windows Ninja!!! He has a video up on the problem at)
    YouTube

    Of course, this being Windows 10, this means attempting to run Windows Update generates a new and improved error code;

    Windows Update Error 0x80080005
    And I'm off to do more research...

    As an update to my previous post;
    Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 Nov. 2019 Update version 1909

    My next bit of luck was to find the following command, which recreates the "Windows Update" service by passing some parameters to svchost and wuauserv.dll;

    sc create wuauserv DisplayName= "Windows Update" binpath= "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs -p" Start= delayed-auto depend= RpcSs

    I then had to manually re-add wuauserv back to my registry - no idea where it went or how it got deleted, but it was gone.
    The following video shows how to add it via regedit;
    YouTube

    I found the following info at Microsoft, discussing the contents of the registry file needed for wuauserv to work;
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...c-5adc7036ed32

    I got Windows Update up and running... until I rebooted. I found that I had to re-enter the command that starts "sc create wuauserv..." then reapply the registry edit, as it was again missing from my registry, and check that wuauserv, bits, cryptSvc
    and msiserver were all running, and then Windows Updates would run properly.

    Anyone with any information as to how to make the changes permanent, stop the registry key for wuauserv from being deleted, it would be immensely helpful!

    I'm not you, so I don't know how much hassle it is to backup the personal data you have on there.
    But to me it would seem that your time would be far better spent backing up your personal stuff.
    And doing a new clean install of Windows 10 1909 from a usb created by Media Creation Tool

    There seems to be a lot of weird stuff going on in your install.
    For all the trouble to do it I would want a better start than that.

    peace

    Wannagofast, to be honest, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to things like this. Maybe more than a bit. You are absolutely right, it is easier and (arguably) better if I do a fresh install. I've already gotten my satisfaction out of (at least temporarily) having gotten Windows Updates to work, but the goal is to have a fully functioning Windows installation... and this is definitely not that.

    Fresh install, here I come.

    Windows search (file explorer): in addition to issues like search syntax no longer being highlighted in blue and the cursor disappearing after a search and trying to modify the search field content, I noted:

    1909: Some users are reporting problems after MS changed the way search works in build 1909. E.g.

    The "Runtimebroker.exe has stopped working" error I reported earlier in this thread has reappeared as of this morning in Reliability History. However, this time, four other people I know also started getting the error today. Two updated 1903 to 1909 via Windows Update, and two used Update Assistant to go from 1809 to 1909. I did a clean install. My earlier fix worked for two weeks. Something happened very recently behind-the-scenes but it doesn't seem to be hurting anything.

    Status update 12/5:

    See first post for more details.

    Windows 10, version 1909 is available for any user on a recent version of Windows 10 who manually selects “Check for updates” via Windows Update. The recommended servicing status is Semi-Annual Channel.

    Beginning today, we will slowly start the phased process to automatically initiate a feature update for devices running the October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809) Home and Pro editions, keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health. We are starting this rollout process several months in advance of the end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process.

    For information on how users running Windows 10, version 1903 can update to Windows 10, version 1909 in a new, streamlined way, see this post.
