The rest.Windows 8.1 Update 1 was expected to bring back the Start Menu and thus make Microsoft’s modern operating system a bit more user-friendly.
It turns out, however, that Microsoft will actually wait until Windows 9 to relaunch the Start Menu in Windows, which means that the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 will lack this particular feature.
Microsoft watchers Mary Jo Foley and Paul Thurrott talked about this improvement in Windows Weekly, explaining that people close to the development process hinted that the Start Menu wouldn’t arrive sooner than Windows 9.
I run Classic Shell on Windows 8.1 and it works just fine, so the addition of a Start Menu isn't a big deal for me.
. . .please MS do not return what is noting more than something that is not needed.
It wont make any difference to me whether they bring the Start button back in 9 or not as I've not actually missed it.
The old start menu isn't something I'd use or miss, but I'm fine with them bringing it back as long as I can turn it off if I want. Metro apps being able to run windowed and resizable is something I look forward to though.
I don't miss it at all, got used to 8.1 ignoring Metro.
I've been up and down on my opinions of W8 and the whole Metro/Modern thing, but I do like the traditional Start Menu more than the start screen. I'm a lot more comfortable on W7, but can deal with W8 if I really need to.
Well, guess I'm in the minority here but I like and use the Start Button/Menu alot. Its convenient , compact, and in alphabetical order. (something that appeals to my borderline OCD)
