    UPDATE:

Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 Nov. 2019 Update version 1909

Current status as of January 21, 2019:

Windows 10, version 1909 is available for any user on a recent version of Windows 10 who manually selects “Check for updates” via Windows Update. The recommended servicing status is Semi-Annual Channel.

We are starting the next phase in our controlled approach to automatically initiate a feature update for an increased number of devices running the October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809) Home and Pro editions, keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health. Our rollout process starts several months in advance of the end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process.

In July, we announced that the Windows 10 November 2019 Update would be a scoped release for select performance improvements, enterprise features and quality enhancements. Today, we are announcing that the Windows 10 November 2019 Update is now available for users on the most recent versions of Windows 10 who seek the new update via Windows Update. My post today covers details on how you can get the November 2019 Update, as we have worked to make this a great experience for all devices, and an exceptionally fast update process for devices running the May 2019 Update. I’ll also cover how commercial organizations can begin targeted deployments and provide an overview of new features.

    How to get the update

Beginning today, the November Update is available for customers seeking to install the latest release. If you are ready to install the update, open your Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and select Check for updates. Once the update appears, you can select Download and install now. (Note: If you follow these steps and do not see “Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909” on your device, you might have a compatibility issue and a safeguard hold is in place until we are confident that you will have a good update experience.) Once you have downloaded the update, you will need to restart your device to complete the update installation process. Make sure to first save your files and close any open apps, then select Restart now.

If you’re not ready to restart, no problem! Simply select Schedule the restart, then pick a day and time that best suits your schedule. If you haven’t had time to schedule the restart, Windows will automatically schedule it for you outside of times you’re actively using your device. You can also choose a time that is convenient for you and pause the update for up to 35 days (seven days at a time, up to five times).

For more information on how to get the November 2019 Update, watch this video.

Semi-Annual Channel release for commercial customers

With today’s release of the November 2019 Update (Windows 10, version 1909), IT administrators should begin targeted deployments to validate that the apps, devices and infrastructure used by their organizations work as expected with the new release and features. Windows 10, version 1909 is available through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Update for Business, and the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC)1 for phased deployment using Microsoft Endpoint Manager (the combination of Configuration Manager and Intune plus cloud-powered features into an integrated management solution) or other systems management software. (Note: The next Semi-Annual Channel release of Windows Server—Windows Server, version 1909—is scheduled for general availability later this month via the Azure Portal and the Volume Licensing Servicing Center.)

For information about the latest features for commercial customers, including the 30 months of service support for Enterprise, IoT Enterprise and Education editions, see What’s new for IT pros in Windows 10, version 1909. For specific information on the update mechanics of Windows 10, version 1909, see this blog post.

Windows 10 and Windows Server, version 1803 Home and Pro editions reach end of service

For Windows 10 devices that are at, or within several months of reaching end of service, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update (with users having the ability to choose a convenient time); keeping those devices supported and receiving the monthly updates that are critical to device security and ecosystem health. The Windows 10 April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803) has reached end of service for Home and Pro editions.

The November 2019 Update provides the latest features

As I have often noted, being on the latest version of Windows 10 provides you with the latest features and the most secure version of Windows. New features include capabilities for:

    • Quickly creating an event directly from the Calendar flyout on the Taskbar.
    • Better managing notifications, including a new button at the top of the Action Center and the ability to sort notifications by most recently shown.
    • Integrating OneDrive content online with traditional indexed results in the File Explorer search box.
    • The navigation pane on the Start menu now expands when you hover over it with your mouse to better inform where clicking goes.
    • Using your voice to activate third-party digital assistants from the Lock screen.

    Update control, quality and transparency

We continue to provide you with more control over updates, making it largely up to you to initiate when an update occurs and increasing transparency throughout the update experience. To keep Windows 10 devices supported and receiving monthly updates, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for devices that are at, or within several months of reaching, end of service. We continue to work to improve Windows 10 quality and will be closely monitoring and sharing the current status of the update via the Windows release health dashboard and following @WindowsUpdate on Twitter. We encourage you to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via the Feedback Hub.

    Note:
1 It may take a day for downloads to be fully available in the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) across all products, markets, and languages.

Windows 10 version 1909 delivery options

In recent blogs by John Cable and myself, we shared how Windows 10, version 1909 (referred to internally as 19H2) will continue our efforts to improve the overall update experience for consumers and businesses. In this post, we are sharing more detail about the mechanics that will be used to provide those improvements.

Before we describe what’s new, however, we want to clarify that if a device is running any version of Windows 10 earlier than version 1903, the process of updating to version 1909 will be the same as previous feature updates. This applies to devices managed with Windows Update or Windows Update for Business, or devices self-managed with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Configuration Manager, or other management tool. Again, for devices running Windows 10, version 1809 and previous, there is nothing new with the update process to version 1909.

What’s new about delivering Windows 10, version 1909

Devices running Windows 10, version 1903 can take advantage of a new way of servicing that leverages the same servicing technology used to deliver monthly quality updates to get the new features and capabilities available in version 1909. This enables you to install the update to Windows 10, version 1909 with an improved update experience and reduced downtime.

Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. As a result, the new features in Windows 10, version 1909 were included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 1903 (released October 8, 2019), but are currently in a dormant/disabled state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on via an “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that simply activates the Windows 10, version 1909 features.

The enablement package is a great option for installing a scoped feature update like Windows 10, version 1909 as it allows you to update from version 1903 to version 1909 with a single restart, reducing update downtime and, thus, enabling you to take advantage of new features right away. Additionally, since Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common baseline, applications and drivers that worked with version 1903 are designed to work as-is with version 1909, just like any Windows 10 quality update.

How to get Windows 10, version 1909

As stated above, if your device is running any version of Windows 10 earlier than version 1903, there are no changes to how you install Windows 10, version 1909. If your devices are running Windows 10, version 1903, here is guidance on how to update to Windows 10, version 1909.

For devices managed by Windows Update

If you receive updates directly from Windows Update, the Windows 10, version 1909 update will be presented just like any feature update. The installation process will be faster, but, as with any feature update, you will have the ability to choose when to install version 1909 using the controls that we announced earlier this year.

If you are using Windows Update for Business, you will receive the Windows 10, version 1909 update in the same way as prior feature updates and as defined by your feature update deferral policy. Windows will automatically choose the right path and will update devices already running Windows 10, version 1903 to Windows 10, version 1909 using the enablement package.

    For self-managed devices

All of the existing options you use to deploy feature updates are supported with Windows 10, version 1909, and update media is (or will soon be) available in all of the normal channels (for more detailed information on timing, please see the Windows IT Pro blog). Note that installing Windows 10, version 1909 via media does not provide the time savings and reduced restarts available when upgrading from version 1903 to version 1909 using the enablement package.

We are making the Windows 10, version 1909 enablement package available on WSUS as KB4517245, which can be deployed on existing deployments of Windows 10, version 1903.

    Additional details

    Versioning

You can verify that the Windows 10, version 1909 update was successful by running Winver, versioning APIs, WMI, and other common interfaces, and verifying that the operating system build number is 18363. Because of the common baseline, even after installing Windows 10, version 1909, individual system file versions will still appear as 18362.

    Disk space

If you choose to keep your devices on Windows 10, version 1903, the disk-space overhead of the dormant/disabled features that are part of the common monthly update is less than 25 MB. Again, those features will remain dormant/disabled until the Windows 10, version 1909 enablement package is used.

    Uninstall

If you do need to uninstall Windows 10, version 1909, open your Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history), select Uninstall updates, and uninstall the Feature Update to Windows 10 version 1909 via Enablement Package (KB4517245). This will revert the device to Windows 10, version 1903. This is a separate path from the Recovery tab, which uninstalls the most recent non-servicing-based feature update.

    Windows Server

Windows Server instances will continue to receive Windows Server, version 1903 monthly quality updates. The feature enablement package will not be automatically offered to Windows Server by Windows Update, nor will it be available in the Microsoft Update Catalog or via WSUS. Instead, refreshed update media will soon be made available for updating to Windows Server, version 1909.

    30 months of support

We want to conclude this post with a quick reminder. Devices running Windows 10, version 1903 receive 18 months of support. Devices running the Enterprise, IoT Enterprise, or Education editions of Windows 10, version 1909 receive 30 months of support. For more information about the Windows servicing lifecycle, please see the Windows lifecycle fact sheet.

Any word on when the ISO is going to be released? The ISO download still says it's the May update.

Learn how devices running Windows 10, version 1903 can update to Windows 10, version 1909 using the same servicing technology used to deliver monthly quality updates, resulting in a single restart and reducing update-related downtime.

I followed the MS article {including Brink's link} through to its comments about their "enablement package" KB4517245 without which, apparently, the Version remains 1903 even after the latest CU is installed.
We are making the Windows 10, version 1909 enablement package available on WSUS as KB4517245, which can be deployed on existing deployments of Windows 10, version 1903
MS say that the "enablement package" KB4517245 is only available through Windows update & WSUS. Has anybody found a direct download link yet?

Settings tells me that I am up to date, it looks like I will have to wait a little longer for 1909. Maybe its because I'm on the slow lane.

It's available via the media creation tool. It's the right version but the sight says May. I got it and here's what it shows.

It's an optional update. Have a look below the "check for updates" button to see if it is available for you.

I had previously dropped out of the Insider builds. I was at 18363.449. (I did the updates from the KB releases, not by Windows Update.) I got 18363.476 from Windows Update this morning.

The Slow ring seems to have switched over to a build of 20H1. You may wish to drop out of the Insider program if you don't want to have that installed.
