Quick question - I am still on 1809. Should there be any issues I should be aware of before going to 1903?

I've been reading a lot of comments that 1903 to 1909 appears to be a minor upgrade and wondering what to expect in my circumstances. I've only been on Windows 10 since December and am used to the Windows 7 way of doing updates

    TIA Phil

Welcome to tenforums. Upgrading to a new major build (other than the exception of 1903-1909) is a full upgrade procedure.

This can be achieved in at least two major ways:
    a. via Windows Update
    b. manually by downloading the relevant 1909 iso file, mounting it, and double clicking setup.exe

    (a) allows and MS compatibility restrictions to be applied, and is subject to the roll-out pattern MS applies over 2-3 months when a build is initially released.
    (b) sets aside most of those checks, but is potentially under your control.

As you are still on 1809, that begs a couple of questions:
    - have you been offered an upgrade?
    - have you disabled Windows Update?

Most people on 1809 have effectively been forced to upgrade.

(The update from 1903-1909 appeared exceptionally more like a normal update (not a feature update/'upgrade'), and could be uninstalled in the same way if upgrading from 1903, and did not replace all the system files).

Note you will not upgrade to 1903, then to 1909.

How to get the Windows 10 November 2019 Update version 1909

Always recommended: ensure you have a current disk image of Windows before making significant changes. Routine use of disk imaging (e.g. Macrium reflect) is tirelessly recommended by tenforums members).

This has been offered via update and I am about to do the update. I prefer to do a little research first as I am coming to grips with the way things are done the Windows 10 way having been a long time Windows 7 user (still am).

Yes and yes, but updates are currently enabled.

Understood and wasn't expecting otherwise as this is what the Windows Update display reported to me.

Thanks for the link - that's a great reference and will bookmark it. All my important stuff is backed up to Dropbox and an external HDD so will be OK if thing's go awry.

Actually 1903-1909 is a small upgrade, it just switches on some code that is already in 1903.

Industry rumours are saying that the reduction from two feature updates each year to the one feature update in spring followed by a regular type update in the Autumn, (fall), (as seen in 1903 & 1909) is to be considered the new norm for windows 10 updates.

This would make a lot of sense as it would reduce the pressure on Microsoft developers, and be welcomed by those with older hardware that appear to have the most issues with the dual feature update scheme. The aim of the regular feature updates, and shorter support cycle was, after all to get as many users as possible onto the latest release of windows, and thus improve service and reliability

True- I was focussing rather on how it appears to a user coming from Win 7 given the way the question was worded. Hence I used 'appeared'.

Please be aware of the huge difference between disk imaging and backing up some files.

If you have a disk image of Windows, then you can recover to how your PC was when you created that image.

Imagine your PC was stolen (but not your securely stored disk with your disk images): you should be able to recover to the same state even with a new PC.
Or your PC becomes irrecoverably unbootable. Or the disk fails.

Again you can restore your disk image of Windows.

Only backing up your personal files means you have to clean install Windows, create user accounts, reinstall all your programs when things go badly wrong.
