You did the right thing. Normally when one is having these kinds of error codes while installing an update, it means somehow, somewhere there is a corruption in your system. A repair install would have been in order if the steps in the article I referred you to didn't work. And finally a clean install if all else fails. That is exactly what you did. Glad you got it all sorted out.

Thanks. I'm still surprised the problem occurred in the first place. I run a very 'clean' system anyway with only a handful of trusted applications and only the bare essentials running in the background. This is the first time an update has caused me installation issues in more years than I care to remember. I guess there's a first time for everything.

Now I find myself slightly paranoid about what I should and shouldn't install. For example, my Samsung NVMe SSD has its own controller driver. Technically it's not required but I ought to be able to install it without issue. Another example is PowerDVD. I've bought and paid for it (including a couple of upgrades along the way) but I know it makes quite a lot of registry changes under the hood in order to make itself the default software for optical disc playback of any kind. It would be nice if it asked first! Then there's my ageing Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements software (on original CD-ROM) which works but feels increasingly 'clunky' and outdated on Windows 10.

In an ideal world one would hope that no third party software (malware aside) could interfere with the smooth running of Windows but I've been using computers long enough to know otherwise! Anyway, fingers crossed the next update goes more smoothly!

Third-party apps are always trying to put themselves as Default. One can always change that in Default Apps Settings. I also use Cyberlink Power DVD which came with the Whole Media Suite and whenever there is an Update for one of their different Apps in the suite, they try to change the Default settings. That goes the same for every third-party App I know of.

To your other point, you don't have to be paranoid to use your system in the normal way. You best line of defense is to backup religiously (Full System Image backup with differential or Incremental). That is exactly what I do and I cannot remember the last time I did a clean Install. Whenever something goes amiss after an update either from MS or a third-party App, all I have to do is to revert back to a state when my computer was working fine.

With that in mind, always remember to have a fresh system backup ready before any major change to your sytem.

Yes, same here with Sticky Notes. After updates applied it would try to open up but fail and close. Resetting the App via Settings>Apps fixed it but I lost my notes.

Still monitoring things but overall I feel my system is not running as smoothly as it was.
