I chased those Event 131 Device Setup Manager meta data errors from my Event Viewer for hours yesterday. Thanks for posting this. :)
How did you fix this? I came up with a method of uninstalling the KB4515384 at login (script for uninstaling at Startup or Shutdown would never work) but after I do so and reboot, sign in as someone who is suppose to get some printers from our printserver, they still arent coming in even after getting rid of the update. How did you correct your printer issues? My eyes are bleeding from looking at this all weekend. Thanks in advance!

    You get release notes.......sometimes.

Problem is that when they fix one problem the fix often breaks something else.

Sorry, I have no suggestions. I didn't fix it I just quit looking at it since I read that it's not just me.

Hmm so i guess the casual CheckHealth/ScanHealth/RestoreHealth doesn't clean it up and one actually has to run something like StartComponentCleanup/ResetBase in order to do so.
DISM's /ResetBase is actually a more aggressive clean up and will make it impossible to uninstall any update prior to the ResetBase. Using Disk Clean up or Storage settings is the same as using DISM's /StartComponentCleanup.

It's still unclear though from the link, if there is scheduled maintenance running on Windows 10 by default that cleans it up periodically (it does for Windows 8)...

TBH, I avoided ever having to use W8 and in W10 I clean up manually ASAP after an update. So no, I don't have personal experience.

As I read it, yes the task runs automatically, but no it won't clean up everything. It will only remove packages that were installed more than 30 days ago. To clean up everything possible you need to manually start the clean up.

    Microsoft said:
The StartComponentCleanup task was created in Windows 8 to regularly clean up components automatically when the system is not in use. This task is set to run automatically when triggered by the operating system. When run automatically, the task will wait at least 30 days after an updated component has been installed before uninstalling the previous versions of the component.

More details on how it's intended to work here, from when it was added to W8.

2.2. What does Component Store Cleanup do?
During automatic Component Store Cleanup, packages will be removed if the following criteria apply:
    • All components in package are in superseded state
    • Packages are not of an excluded class (permanent, LP, SP, foundation)
    • Package is older than defined age threshold

    ...

During manual Component Store Cleanup, packages will be removed if the following criteria apply:
    • All components in package are in superseded state
    • Packages are not of an excluded class (permanent, LP, SP, foundation)

That mentions the Chinese IME high CPU bug. One user reported they received a second version (?) of this update, and installing that fixed this problem.

We're also on 1709 and I daresay we will move to 1809 in the next couple of months.
well krzemien & OldGuyFromCdn you better upgrade to 1809 sooner rather than later since the home & pro editions of v1709 went out of support [aka EOL] on April 2019 (though enterprise & education versions of 1709 get a 1-year extension until EOL on April 2020)

note to Brink: this article on Softpedia news about KB4515384 and "broken audio" recently came out

    Windows Update settings question

I'm running win10 Pro and about to do my first update (new build).I have windows update paused, and set the date to Oct. 10th. I installed the ssu manually with no issues. Here's my question:
If i resume WU and don't change the date, can i download the updates without them installing?

Hi, I think you may be referring to a feature update (upgrade) as you mention a new build.

You have Pro, so if you wish you can defer feature updates for up to 365 days, whilst updates continue.
You can also set updates to Notify - which means you get notification of an available update.

However that is processed thus when you act on it:
Notify before downloading and installing any updates.

When Windows finds updates that apply to this computer, users will be notified that updates are ready to be downloaded. After going to Windows Update, users can download and install any available updates.
    - no option to download only.

If you wished to, you could download an iso for the next build manually.

Could you explan what you're trying to achieve by wanting to download but not install?
