OK, @Mael: I'm rebooting after adding the afore-cited Registry key. Let's see if this makes any difference. Installing 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-20-sitting here a while-44-sitting here a while too - 100 - still getting the 0x800F081F error. I've got other fish to fry for a while. Maybe something else will come up. Thanks.

I have restored to before update. Have restored all cortana settings(shutup10) and an currently retrying the CU. Will update when done.
I think Mael is correct, the relevant setting in ShutUp10 is under "Miscellaneous" at the bottom - "Extension of Windows 10 search with Bing disabled".

Thanks. I now have cortana behaving. I will experiment with Shutup10 over the weekend. I reset everything to standard as a starting point and will go from there.

When I try to install it on my laptop I get Error: 0x80070002 from both the cab and WU.

I am having lots of problems with this one. It doesn't seem to want to download/install. Every time I tried, I am having this "Retry" message. I have just "Reset Updates" with .cab file from Brink's tutorial and I am having another go at it... Let's see if that works this time around (fingers crossed).

Edit: No luck. this is what I got... how convenient!

Edit: blocking Cortana in ShutUp10 caused Cortana to go crazy again, guess they're forcing it on us now.
This update showing up as 'Optional' in WU here.

DL'd & Installed - same high CPU useage = Cortana & Seach 'dead'.

Uninstalled and 'Opting' to leave it that way!
