Being both a Mac and Windows user I go with VMWare because on the Mac it is VMWare Fusion, and on the Windows side it is VMWare Workstation and player.

Would have answer earlier, but been a sleep all day (my brain needs lot of rest). VMWare is first a retail program and VB is free. Second VMWare has better tools for working with VMs especially within a network. Third VMWare supports drag and drop (moving files between the host and VM, VB doesn't (for me this is the killer for VB). Also VMWare has VMWare player which is free (you can create or use VMWare player with what are called appliances (VMs created for different OS (less Mac OS X).

I use VirtualBox pretty much every day and have done for many years.
I personally have never come across issues with networking but haven't used VMWare to compare.

I do ditto the Drag 'n' Drop support, VirtualBox does have support for this but i believe it is only Linux hosts and that only supports the Host>Guest functionality.

Bidirectional doesn't work yet and Windows hosts don't have any support, please correct me if someone knows otherwise.

I used to have issues with USB devices in the past but have found USB support to have improved immensely over the past couple of years.

My Usage:
At Work: I have several Windows 7 and XP Virtual Machine's that i use to test different applications as well has having what i call my main VM that i use as a 2nd PC, this is the machine i install random admin software on to keep my main Windows 8 machine free of clutter.
At Home: Similar to work, i use this to keep my host free of clutter by installing any random software on the VM, obviously if i use a piece of software all the time then i will put it on my host machine.

I would love to run Linux as the host, then Windows 7 in VBox. However my CAD software doesn't seem to like that...

I really someone had a solution for this.

Never used any CAD software so can't really offer much assistance I'm afraid but if it helps I did see something on-line about a piece of CAD software called 'CATIA'

When installing the guest add-ons, de-select "Direct3D-Support"

I can't vouch for that working but maybe worth ago?

Catia!? Sure... do you have an arm and a leg?

First choice for me would be SolidEdge as they have a native Linux installer and their software is top drawer stuff.

My current software requirements:

For some reason I just can't seem to get it running on VBox. That said, the last time I tried was nigh on two years ago so maybe I should give it another bash.
