Wouldn't it be a cold day in hell when Microsoft gave us some error messages the layman could understand? Instead of "we couldn't update....code is 05467AADXE" maybe "we couldn't update because PLACEBO.SYS is missing" or even "we couldn't update, please run SFC /scannow".
When they code the updates they obviously check whether certain conditions apply or not, and whether certain files exist or not to be able to either continue with the update or abort.
So if they can check, why can't they just tell us why it fails instead of lazy half assed coding with an error code.
Lets face it a game will tell you DXFABRICATED.DLL is missing, a graphics app will tell you "that's not an image file", a video player will tell you "that is not a video file" etc.
Just a little more information would be nice so even the less technically minded could sort issues out or know where to look for help.

Hi! I've also got issues with this update. I get the error: 0x80070002
None of the fixes proposed here work. None of the fixes offered by Microsoft works.
    SFC reports no issues.
Dism reported an issue, attempted to fix, didn't work.
    SSU is up to date.
Update has been deleted and re-downloaded.
    Windows Update has been reset.
Manual download and installation of update has been attempted and failed.

The symptoms are that the update does "successfully" install, but during the reboot process where it is being applied, it stops progressing at 6-7%, and then stays there before the system gives up and reboots.
It then proceeds to inform me that the update has failed & that it is undoing the update.

I'm getting pretty fed up with Windows Update nagging me about it. Is there any way for me to just outright block the update from being downloaded/installed until this is fixed? I get serious anxiety whenever the update fails during shutdown/reboot (a history of Windows Update ruining several different computer systems requiring re-installs has left me a touch traumatized of the software).
I just want it to stop!

If it helps, here's the CBS log that was produced by attempting to repair corrupted files (that turned up upon my 2nd go of sfc /scannow .

EDIT: Huh, I thought this was gonna be pending moderation but apparently not.
OK, since my other post isn't visible/seems to have gotten lost:

Symptoms: Finishes downloading and installing, reports success, then stops at 6-7% during reboot & then gives up, reverting the changes after another reboot, and then reboots again.

Attempted all proposed fixes in this thread to no avail. Attempted reset of Windows Update to no avail. Latest SSU is already installed. Manual installation did not produce any different results.
The official Windows Update troubleshooter just thinks the problem is the system is pending reboot to apply an update lol

    Error code: 0x80070002

The system I'm running is only a month old, essentially brand new and is basically factory settings except for a wallpaper, some colour changes & various video game launchers and corresponding video games.

Windows is: Windows 10 Home 64-bit, version 1903 (though OS-version also says 18362.239, idk what that means).

    Hi there

Nice in theory but in practice not many "Ordinary" people out there are messing around with these sorts of builds -- so Ms (and in some cases probably correct) assumes that people messing around with these are much more computer literate and would be able to research the error or contact some type of Ms "Helpless Desk".

If you just got a message "It's Broken" please call xxxx -- that would be an absolute piece of heaven for scammers to get inti the act and inject this as Ransomware on your pc.

I agree though that the "Bog standard" update which people run from standard retail builds should work properly.

Reading all the problems people have on this board with WU and some of these insider etc builds I'm glad I elect to install any of these with UUPDUMP -- and that so far hasn't failed -- not saying that the actual builds are perfect or without some defects but the system invariably installs and boots OK.

The only other thing I suggest to people who get failed system updates is to do a CLEAN windows install as a VM - image it and then restore to your physical machine -- it should activate OK on the physical machine even if the VM isn't activated as the digital license will be preserved. Don't try and activate the VM -- you can install macrium on it for immaging and then do a stand alone restore to your physical machine.

This way you should avoid "driver problems" which presumably can be loaded afterwards.

Incidentally if doing "the VM method" and using VMWare or VBOX for this don't install VMWare tools or VBOX additions on the guest --you only are going to use it once for doing a V2P (Virtual to physical" conversion.

    Cheers

Things do not break on their own. So with this in mind and Microsoft's acknowledgement that this is the issue they created (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...903#634msgdesc), I do not agree with this approach at all.

Thesis with possible explanation as to what happened - as presented here (apologies, I already provided link yesterday morning):

    Topic: Patch Lady – 1903 Error 0x80073701 @ AskWoody

This is caused by the multiple releases of July D-Week update KB4505903 in Release Preview Ring

the first version of this update “18362.263” contained some updated components (particulary swenum.inf and ufxchipidea.inf)
but then in later versions they removed these two components
August update KB4512508 also don not contain those components

the issue occur if the user ran Update Cleanup (via disk cleanup or manually with DISM tool) after installing the 18362.263 version of KB4505903, which removes and replace the inbox RTM version of the components with updated ones

later when he try to install other versions or August update, they fail because neither the system have the RTM components, or the new updates have the updated components

the issue seems to occur in x64 only
there is an easy fix for this, but it’s for a little more experienced users

as for Microsoft, the fix is also really easy, just release new cumulative update that contain updated version of the missing components
they don’t even have to update the actual binaries

My guess (after some googling) is that this is what needs to be removed to get this working (CAUTION: THIS MAY NOT BE APPLICABLE IN YOUR CASE):

    [SOLVED] - WU - KB4512508 error 0x800f0982 | Sysnative Forums

I decided to await Microsoft's update - I bet it will arrive quite shortly.

However, I really can't stand this CU being applied and failing daily on my PC - talk about the waste of resources!

I understand a lot of people on this forum use insider versions of Windows, however I do not, I use a retail version of Win10pro.
The failure of this update to work and the proposed fixes affect people with non- insider Windows and a lot of those people will not necessarily be technically minded or be members of sites like this.
I was lucky in that I am a persistent fiddler, I like to peek under the hood and poke around a bit hence finding my own cure which was to use MMCT to download the Win10 1903_295 ISO and perform an in place upgrade.
But really, this method of fixing Microsoft's mistakes is not ideal, a lot of people bought a PC to just make art or music or skype their grandkids and having to reinstall Windows or type a list of "arcane" commands into a console to fix issues that really shouldn't exist is beyond most of them.
This update was offered through Windows update to consumer versions of Windows, was it even tested on insider versions? I find it hard to believe that no insider has modified their copy of Windows since install, or has not used disk clean up or DISM.
So why was it released in such a state.

This CU was not pre-released to insiders. Presumably because it was a security update.
