New Windows 10 Insider Preview Fast+Skip Build 18956 (20H1) - August 7 Insider

At the moment, I'm on "Fast/Skippy" and can't afford a clean install until Skip Ahead is officially offered again or I'll lose my Skippy status.


As we used to say, back in the day, different strokes for different. I thought I'd try to avoid this but dropping Skip Ahead and going on the Fast ring but I always get dropped to Slow (recommended) after every update aS well. I have accepted this annoyance but it is a stupid annoyance. Why can't MS just realse some ballpark figures or even a rought ratio of users on the Slow ring (and stalying on it presumably happy) vs FaSt/Skippy - right now they are obvisously the same. By using the well known registry hacks I could likely "stay" on the Skippy ring but it just seems pointless with lead times of over a yeazr. Fortunately, we have the UUPDUMP MULTI ISO (which BTW now fits on a standard size DVD (one-sided)) so I'm just staying on Windows for Workstations. Maybe some kind soul will share an activation key but maybe not. There is always Linux and the near certainity that a brand new kernel will arrive every Sunday.

Sorry if this has already been brought up but I needed to do this ASAP.

I've tried to do an update from my UUP downloaded ISO of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build x64 18956 but it keeps coming up saying that it needs more space on my C: drive before updating?!




10GB?!?!? There is already 295GB free on C: drive!!

And that 29.4GB USB drive shown is empty and ready for this update to use but when I click on Next it goes to C: drive again looking to free up space on there again!! But why?? So I've just given Update 29.4GB on that USB drive as well as what's available on C: drive!!

I had to change an HDD on my IP that got Build 18950 but couldn't get Build 18956. Got to exploring and the clean install was resetting my IP to Slow ring using my Microsoft Account. I reset to Fast Ring but didn't take, reset to Fast Ring again and rebooted, got the Build 18956 right away. Another thing to keep an eye on in Windows Insider Program in Settings.

Yeah, always happens on clean install.

You should do like I am doing now - install the base (currently 1903) and immediately image it . Then, get it set up exactly like you want. Apps, drivers, profiles, the whole shebang. Then image that also.

Next time you want to clean install, save your profile info that is necessary (like AllData, etc.) load the full backup, copy the relevant files that have changed in AllData and you should be good to go.

Of course, it helps (for me) that I have a separate physical HD where all Docs, Pics, Music and Video files are stored, so I don't include those in the system image backup I mention above. Another thing, I actually use 2 SSDs for the system, one for everything but \Users and the other for \Users only - but neither of these is necessary to make this work. If you have to image those special folders along with your system, it may take longer, and you'll obviously need more storage space to store the larger image - but using @Kari's viBoot trick (assuming you used Macrium to make the images) to load the image of the Full System that you made, you can copy the relevant files from your current system (like profiles, etc.) directly to the saved image, then save the viBoot loaded image and your image is now updated with all your files, and ready to load.

It sounds like a lot of work - but once you get through the first part and make the full blown image with all your profiles, apps, and such, you'll see that it is a lot easier to clean install - because you're clean installing a full system image, not from true scratch.

I did do a couple of Resets on that machine, this episode started showing I had a possibly bad drive. At the second time I decided to put a newer used drive back in service and all is good.

As an aside I've started cleaning 'house', just dumped all the 512MB and smaller memory modules and under 200GB drives will go out tomorrow.

I've highlighted why it's the first time you've encountered it. It only happens on Clean installs, not normal upgrades through WU / UUPDUMP-derived .ISOs / M$-derived .ISOs.

What I do is create the .ISO, then double click on it to mount it and run setup.exe from the mounted .ISO - the only time a USB drive is involved is to copy the actual .ISO to other computers to update them, and I do the same thing - copy the .ISO to the HD on each computer, then double-click the .ISOto mount and run setup.exe from inside.

How exactly are you trying to upgrade?

If that downloaded ISO you made from UUPDump is on the :C drive, move it to something external, and mount and run from there. That'll getcha 4GB right off.
