    Just installed this into a Hyper-V Test PC running 18362.239 and it completely killed the Start Menu AND the search panel/icon.

    If I brought the mouse over the Start Button - it would light up and display the tool tip but nothing happens when clicking on it. Same for my Search Icon - no action whatsoever.

    This VM was created using MDT and a custom start menu - so it seems there is still some problems here. The PC was essentially unusable.

    For the first time ever - I had to uninstall an cumulative update via command line.

    It uninstalled cleanly and I am now back to .239. Everything works fine again.

    For what it's worth.

    Hi folks
    @Lion2
    probably a bit late now but don't people image their systems before doing any updates --with things like macrium (free software) and decent ssd it doesn't take more than around 15 mins and saves hours of hassle afterwards if updates don't run properly -- restore (Macrium etc all have bootable restore functionality) old image then you are back in business.

    Cheers

    Hi!
    This update is supposed to fix problems with Windows Hello i.e. PIN logon. I never had any problems with PIN logon but after this update PIN logon stopped working. I only got a message saying something like "Try again later"!

    Mysteriously the PIN logon suddenly worked again after about one week without me doing anything.

    Windows 10 still in beta...

    I am an updates junkie and never had any problems, except for Explorer running at almost 100% CPU on a very slow machine. Fixed it by permanently lowering the priority of Explorer to idle. System Explorer can do that. Well, yes, in the previous case start menu was not working well, but lowering the priority fixed it.

    While that is a solid idea - I would never be taking the time to image a ton of machines in a small business environment or even my personal machine to apply a standard Microsoft Cumulative update. They should just work.

    I would guess that not many people think this way in this "Windows as a Service" delivery model.

    Cheers

    Hi there

    @SonicMojo

    maintaining loads of corporate computers etc - that's a totally different ballgame to individuals upgrading their machines which is what I supect most people on these Forums are doing -- even if they have small home LANS too.

    I doubt whether any corporate I.T people (not unless they want to get fired) would willy nilly update a load of computers individually via WU anyway --I suspect that they would decently test the updates on their "technician type" of machines, make a sysprep, test that and then rollout the updates from their own servers rather than use ms WU directly.

    I haven't been in corporate I.T so I might be speaking B/S here but I can't really see any sensible I.T dept doing zillions of updates for individual machines via WU.

    Most places where I've worked in the past usually lock off the Ms WU -- and there's plenty of opportunity to backup and restore user data --usually on demand too. The desktop image is usually presented via a Virtual Desktop infrastructure - something using say a Windows server environment via Cittrix or similar so you can use your own laptops too instead of corporate ones if the company allows it -- what you do on your own desktop is your own business but corporate I.T if it's any good keeps a handle on its own servers etc etc.

    Cheers

    Hi,
    Seeing updates are pushed every freaking week it's senseless to do imaging that often
    Fine for personal data backup that often but I agree updates should be seamless otherwise ms is a fail.

    True dat. However - I installed this via WSUS - by importing it into the catalog and it killed the VM anyway. No different from me using WU.

    Regarding Corp IT - you would be surprised at how little "testing" happens for each cumulative update. I work a very large corporation with 20000 users and there is no SysPrepping or anything else going on. The update is rolled out straight away to everyone the weekend after Patch Tuesday. With the built in assumption that it will just work.

    Granted - this KB 4505903 patch is out of band and would not appear on WSUS) so there is no chance it would appear in a corporate environment. But it is sad that this patch - which screams a lot about fixing issues with the Start menu ends up botching my Start menu. First time that has ever happened.
