Windows Defender getting renamed to Microsoft Defender

    Posted: 20 Jul 2019

Windows Defender is being rebranded to Microsoft Defender to indicate that it now part of a cross platform family of products. This includes enterprise products, which offer solutions for multiple OS platforms.

Historically, Microsoft's consumer antivirus product has been called Windows Defender. With the release of their enterprise security offerings called Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) and Microsoft Defender ATP for Macs, Microsoft has decided to rebrand the Windows version under this family name as well.

In a statement to BleepingComputer, Microsoft has stated that they are making these changes to show that their security products have become cross-platform under the umbrella name Microsoft Defender.

“As part of our continued $1B a year investment to deliver a world class security platform for our customers, we are extending Windows Defender ATP capabilities beyond the Windows operating system. As a result, we are renaming to reflect our cross-platform approach to endpoint security”

    Hi folks

Does that mean Ms is worried about "The ememy at the gates" . Surely the marketing people could come up with some more sexy / interesting sounding name !!!

As far as the extra possible functionality is concerned I'm not sure that I like the idea in any case of Ms having access to / and or doing things to Non Ms Operating systems.

I believe even in "The Good Book" it states "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's - which IMO is a pretty good exhortation to only take over / control things for which you have responsibility.

    Cheers

But Caesar WAS Rome(in his own mind) and Rome did bring, for the time, much better infrastructure for their concord territories.
Like fresh water via aqueducts to cities, and paved roads, safer traveling and protection from crime for the normal person.

That said, Microsoft is in a position to offer better security infrastructure having the most used PC OS

So, if we follow your thinking, only Microsoft written and controlled anti-virus software should be used with a Microsoft OS?

    Hi folks
I'm not wanting to start Biblical / philosophical wars here !!!!!

No probs with Ms or anybody else suppying appropriate Software that will run on any OS -- my beef is just that the USER should retain the ultimate control over what get installed on their hardware.

I just (probably mis read the article --remember for some people here ENG isn't first language) that the new Ms Defender system would automatically search out all your devices and set up its mechanisms without any user interaction or give the user any choice whether to install it or not.

That I think is a step too far and that's what I was having a beef against.
