So, if I enable having Windows turn my screens off after a specific amount of time, my computer goes into some sort of weird state where, upon attempting to interact with it again (mouse movement, key press, [CTRL] + [ALT] + [DELETE] , etc.) leads to a ton of HD activity and then a forced reboot. If I disable that setting, it doesn't do that.

That is, by far, the strangest thing I've seen Windows do in a long time.

Definitely ready for a new build.
And I get the occasional screen freeze. Other than having to do a hard shutdown and reboot, it doesn't seem to have caused any other problems. Strange, though!

There have been tons of discusions on this very forum from a whole slew of posters who have complained time and time again about basic parts of Windows being broken and fixed over and over. You can search for the details, but I assume you can remember many of them as you were part of some of those conversations. So I am NOT alone in this sentiment. My point is, and has been for quite some time now, that M$ continually wastes time on periferal things while allowing more important common OS functionality to go unrepaired for months. I totally understand that 3rd party venders need to keep up with the changes, but to assume that it is COMPLETELY on the venders every single time, and that M$, being the angelic company they are being portrayed to be, have no responsibility in this is shallow thinking in my opinion. It is further my opinion that M$ is not nearly as customer centric as some of you perfer to believe they are. I believe they do try to market themselves as such, but their actions speak a completely different language. They have introduced features and then those features just disappear. They have broken parts of the OS, and fixed them, only to break them again a build later. They say that they are listening to the insiders, but more than an estimated 85% of the complaints and problems listed in the Insiders Hub go unattended to, and are never fixed. And I believe that they only pay attention to things they have on their agenda, and when those things jibe with some feedback, they take credit for listening to the insiders and giving them what they asked for. JMHO. If you feel differently I'm completely fine with that.
OK, so you think Microsoft is that big giant corporation that doesn't give a hoot about its customers. You make all these accusations without any backup whatsoever.

Please give at least one instance of each of the following:

ignoring vital parts of the OS for months and months at a time

What gets me is that so many people here think that the Microsoft corporation, as a whole, and the Insider's Preview group, as a subset, is comprised of 5-7 people who do all of the coding for Windows 10 builds. Everything, from GUI, to backend, to WU, to telemetry, to everything else.

Guess again. The team that is working on boot issues may or may not be the same one that is working on the install issues, but you can pretty much guarantee that the team working on things like emojis (aka Desktop team / GUI team) probably have [I]very little/I] to do with the team that works on the installation issues. So, yeah, in that respect, I can easily understand how the emojis made t through so quickly - I seriously, seriously doubt that a set of emojis are going to cause installation or boot issues. IOW, they passed their QC and were integrated.

It's not rocket science - but it's not a small, 5 person dev team show either.

And last I checked, you usually don't want your GUI dev team working on installation an boot issues. Unless you really are working on a 5 person dev team for the entire OS - but then, I doubt your software will have as many lines of code as Windows 10 as an OS does.

Oh, this is much, much worse.

If I turn on that setting to turn off my monitors (like a good little power saver) the monitors turn off. Then when I try to wake the machine back up, it starts accessing files on the SSDs, furiously, the lights on the monitors go from orange (power save) to green, like it is going to come back alive ... then the machine flat out reboots, as if I pressed the reset button. I have warnings galore throughout event mgr about the system was shut down unsafely, every single time this happens - and they stop right after I turn that setting off.

But, the freaky thing is that my monitors still go to power standby mode in the same prescribed time period - 10 min. And my actual power plan (in Control Panel) is set to have them do that - but if I enable the one in Windows Settings, p00f! I cannot wake the machine up and it goes into a forced reboot, with all sorts of warnings everywhere.

I'd love to troubleshoot it - but I'm not taking a chance with data corruption.

I've updated to 18945, but I just turned on "Turn off display" and "Put the computer to sleep" after ten minutes to see if the issue pops up.

I've had my both of those turned off because of frequent updates.

Well, if it was messing up on display in this Build, it doesn't in Build 18945.

Yeah, I clean installed 18945, I suspect there were other issues. On 18936, I had it twice log me in with a temporary profile, and while I was able to find the registry entries to point it back to the correct profile folder both times, I suspect there was something else going on in the background that overtly damaged the registry. So, I decided to clean install (it had been 5 months anyway )
