Microsoft now auto updating Windows 10 version 1803 and older to 1903

    Last Updated: 16 Jul 2019 at 15:16

We are initiating the Windows 10 May 2019 Update for customers with devices that are at or nearing end of service and have not yet updated their device. Keeping these devices both supported and receiving monthly updates is critical to device security and ecosystem health. Based on the large number of devices running the April 2018 Update, that will reach the end of 18 months of service on November 12, 2019, we are starting the update process now for Home and Pro editions to help ensure adequate time for a smooth update process.

Our update rollout process takes into consideration the scale and complexity of the Windows 10 ecosystem, with the many hardware, software, and app configuration options users have, to provide a seamless update experience for all users. We closely monitor update feedback to allow us to prioritize those devices likely to have a good update experience and quickly put safeguards on other devices while we address known issues. Windows 10 Home and Pro edition users will have the ability to pause the update for up to 35 days so they can choose a convenient time.

How to Pause Updates or Resume Updates for Windows Update in Windows 10

The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is available for any user who manually selects “Check for updates” via Windows Update on a device that does not have a safeguard hold for issues already detected. If you are not offered the update, please check below for any known issues that may affect your device.

We recommend commercial customers running earlier versions of Windows 10 begin targeted deployments of Windows 10, version 1903 to validate that the apps, devices, and infrastructure used by their organizations work as expected with the new release and features.

Customers on Windows 10, version 1809 using Windows Update for Business set to Semi-Annual Channel and a 0-day deferral: your 60-day one-time deferral period will end on Tuesday, July 23, and your devices will begin updating to Windows 10, version 1903.

Microsoft made it clear when introducing the 'Download and install now' option that it only applied while your installed version was in support. 1803 reaches end of service in four months on November 12, 2019. Now that may be a loose interpretation of 'several months', but you can't say you weren't warned

Starting with update KB4497934, we are introducing functionality that allows you to decide when to install a feature update...
...When Windows 10 devices are at, or within several months of reaching, end of service, Windows Update will begin to automatically initiate a feature update.
    Cumulative Update KB4497934 Windows 10 v1809 Build 17763.529 - May 21

1809 doesn't expire until May 12, 2020 so you have a longer stay of execution for that version.

There have already been a few posts in the forums suggesting their 1803 had automatically updated to 1903 without them clicking the optional 'Download and install now'.

I have left my test machine (System Two below) running 1803 24/7 for the past couple of months to test just when this would happen. I can now confirm that windows update has just initiated the auto-update to 1903. As this is 1803 Pro I had set the group policy to 'notify before downloading...' (so it hasn't actually started the upgrade). But no longer do I have the option to continue ignoring the 'Download and install now' that it had been showing these past few months. That has gone, now my only option is to download.

Thanks Bree. Now I am comfortable it's working as descrilbed and I can let my v.1809 system sit until EOL gets close. Just have to make sure I don't accidently hit the "Download and Install" link.

Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated updated.
Sorry couldn't resist. The impression I got from what I saw online was "this is going to happen" want it or not.
IMHO its always been our way or the highway where Microsoft is concerned. IMHO they only concede things after a big public backlash.
I'm running 1903 anyway so no big deal for me. If your hardware has issues with 1903, its going to suck for those affected though.

For Home, yes it is. But for the 1083 Pro on my test machine it was possible to gain a stay of execution.

Even though WU was ready and waiting to update to 1903, it was still possible to defer feature updates for 365 days. In order to kick WU into checking for updates again I paused, then un-paused updates. After downloading just the Security Intelligence update WU said I was up to date.

I now expect it to get the 1809 feature update on November 13th 2019, 365 days after its release. Though I'll probably not leave the test machine running 24/7 until then - it deserves a rest

Received my 1903, Update 07, 29,19, Now both my internal& External CD/DVD Burners are Dead, I know, with Win 10, Microsoft wanted to go with Flash Drives, but A lot of Data, photos, Sound bytes, user manuals, are on DVD&CD, I guess, it's time to start looking at Apple& or Linux, for Disk accepting PC's, or Forget it Altogether!

All my PC's as far as I know are now on 1903. My wife's laptop was the last holdout and she got upgraded just the other day. I assume to 1903. I know it upgraded because I got the "why am I seeing these screens, it never did this before" comment from my wife. I then quickly clicked though the setup menus for her so she could get on Facebook. I hadn't deliberately blocked anything on her laptop, it was on default windows update settings etc. I only ever touch it when something doesn't work. And I honestly don't know what build it was running before upgrading. Windows 10 was installed on that laptop many moons ago.
