    Hi TZ,

I'm confused about the office thing? Isn't IDM not related to Office or anything....
    Me to.

The 'office thing' came in when Dannee used this to back up his assertion that IDM was acting up:
    ReneHoss said:
    Version 1903 build 18362.145.

I noticed that with updating to the latest version of Windows 10 pressing Alt-Tab for switching between programs sometimes produces an extra preview window that is superfluous.

I.e. if you open Excel you can see the normal preview of the worksheet with Alt-Tab, but also a second window that is grey with a little blue icon in it. This window has no further function and is annoying when Alt-tabbing through your programs.
Also the program Internet Download Manager has this extra window when IDM is started in the background right after booting the computer.
So I suspect this problem has got something to do with loading programs in the background.

Problem wasn't present in previous versions or builds.
Can anyone confirm this to be an issue?
    Then Ztrucker asked:

    I'm at 1903 build 18362.207 and I don't see this extra window.
    I have Office 2007.

Do you see this only if Office is the only window open on the Desktop?
Right after Dannee's post #238 And it's repeated in Danee's post #240 At that point Dannee failed to squash the relationship with Outlook.
I believe the confusion comes in when ReneHoss mentions that the 'extra preview window' occurs in two different programs and no one differentiated between the two, including me.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that it didn't matter to Ztrucker what programs were being used he was just trying to replicate the problem. btw; I also tried to replicate but couldn't see any 'extra window'.

I 'think' that's as close as I can get it, now:

    • A lot has changed from 1809 to 1903. What's good one day could be bad the next.
    • How can you be sure it's not a browser issue? Unless you try it with Edge.
What do you mean by browser issue? the extension on Edge is not even installed. only on chrome.
Dannee, yes, we have established that IDM is a 3rd party app and now finally you mention that you're using it with chrome. The point I was trying to make is even if you don't like Edge install IDM on to it, and see if you can replicate the extra window problem.

If IDM works with Edge, but doesn't with your IDM/Chrome combination, well then, there's a compatibility problem and you're just gonna have to wait until the owners of all three programs work it out and get it fixed; And they are Windows, IDM and Chrome.

    Hi,
Disabling chrome add-ons from operating in the background when chrome is closed might also help or confirm it's the issue

I for one don't have chrome installed.

I doubt the IDM issue has anything to do with the browser extension. It's just the way the whole program is built. It tries to open up a dialog before Windows desktop is ready. I bet the issue would remain even without any browser integration enabled.

I would avoid the application all together until IDM get's an update. Don't get me wrong, IDM is a useful tool (I've tried it ages ago), but I try to avoid all these types of 3rd party tools for as long as humanly possible. If I remember correctly, I think I had a similar issue (empty windows) with IDM when installed on Windows Server 2012 years ago. I had a lot of other sketchy behavior. Uninstalling the app solved all issues.

    Hi,
Yep not sure why a download manager is needed
Just how hard is it to open downloads folder or direct downloads to a different folder location

Only reason I could think of is when one downloads big files on slow connection. IDM splits the DL into chunks and when downloaded all parts it rebuilds the original file. It also supports DL resuming.

It's not so much a slow connection, it helps with a slow server as the "chunks" are downloaded in parallel.

True. I usually don't have slow server issues though. Most stuff I DL comes down with a rate of 35-42Megabytes/second. Slowest is OneDrive at 5-10MB/s

My thanks to ThrashZone, slicendice, and kado897 for giving a better perspective on Dannee's situation and IDM.
