    Hi there

    for HOME use computers all these 3rd party AV products are just IMO pointless --WD works perfectly -- it also has built in antimalware etc so even the venerable malwarebytes isn't needed any more. AV protection is now really built deeply into the kernel itself and updated frequently --far more often than any 3rd party supplier could do.

    Those old AV programs were essentially solving security issues of 20 Century when Windows leaked like a sieve (i.e no decent protection) and before things like scamming / identity fraud etc etc became prevalent. The name of the game is making money now so attacks against Mom and Pop type home computers is so last century (C20) that no self respecting hacker would even bother doing it. --There's no money or even fun in doing it.

    For corporates or attacking a country's infrastructure is a totally different issue so professional security is still vital - but honestly 99.999% of people would find just running WD on Windows 10 computers at home perfectly safe.

    I'll bet you could even use places like the venerable TPB and still never get a smidgen of a Virus with WD enabled and its real time protection. Believe me I Do know what I'm talking about here - I've often used some dubious places in the past and haven't been infected -- I've been using Windows for years ever since Windows 3.11 for workgroups. !!

    Now this morning I'm doing a tip I learned from @f14tomcat to open your machine to the desktop and then walk away from it for at least 20 to 30" because it seems the new FU's are still digesting their new environment. TC helped me make the decision to use the WUA (windows update assistant) to install 1809 and when it was acting 'bitchy' he told me 'bout the tip and it straightened 1809 right out. Kudos to Dick H!
    Hey Anak. Thats one routine that's spot on. I feel fortunate that soon after getting my W10 (it came with 1607), I realized Windows requires the time to settle down, and I given it to it. I wrote this post I am linking below at another forum about the routine I strictly follow after updating, when I start the computer, or, as you say, when Windows is acting 'bitchy' .

    Hi there

    @CountMike

    I usually run Windows as VM's on Linux hosts anyway -- however I'm always surprised how people think old fashioned AntiVirus / Anti malware software designed for a "bygone age" is fit for purpose in the new 21 Century Windows age -- and when they quote comparative tests from magazines about the effectiveness of AV software -then you have to realize its all over.

    Old fashioned batch testing comparative results are utterly useless -- not only are they 100% out of date before the magazine even hits press day but also everybody uses their machines in different ways so there's no likelihood of people having any situations that even replicates the test bed results in the first place.

    The biggest snake oil snalemen on the planet these days are retail operators telling people when they buy a new comuter is to add extra paid for AV software -- even the slimiest used car salesman is better than that. !!!! or so called "AV computer security specialists" -- Networks / corporate stuff OK - but for Home computers -- C'mon folks give up ---your time has been and gone.

    Been a long day, had more chores and errands than I originally thought.

    Let's see if I can cover everyone.

    Kado and slicendice: Thanks for giving 'bitchy' a more technical explanation. I never experienced the problem with win7 .net or other updates and I usually ran my backups a day or so after, just lucky in reverse I guess.

    bo: I was close to how you do it.
    My routine. After upgrades and W10 updates, I leave the computer alone for a while, perhaps for about 30 minutes, I basically don't do anything, I let things settle down before I start doing things. I might toy a little with Task manager, or open File Explorer, and close it quickly. But basically, I dont start using or testing the computer before a while has gone by. And then, a couple hours later, I reboot again, and do the same routine again, and again, during the first few starts or reboots of the new system.

    bo's post at Wilders
    I started left it run for close to an hour, then shut down, and restarted 'bout 15" later and when I left the house I just closed the lid, mines set to go to sleep - no hiberfil. When I came home a few hours later I opened the lid and it went to the log-in, I did that and it's been runnin' pretty good so far. Jimbo and Count Mike... What can I say that hasn't already been said? (actually I like the emoji that has the tongue off to the side better, like over on 7F.)

    Security is in the eye of the beholder.
    If it makes a person feel better using an adjunct to Defender and its firewall then so be it. But; That user should be aware of the conflicts with Defender that can arise when using it and if, having problems, make troubleshooting the compatibility of the two products a priority.

    I have always had Zemana anti-logger on my machines and it wasn't showing any signs of conflict with Defender but, just on the off-chance that these crazy 10 updates would get a foul taste with it I decided to err on the side of caution, tomorrow it gets re-started and I'm going to leave it on to see if the next 'big' update can swallow it.

    Just for reasons Jimbo said I stopped using 3rd party AVs, they are just a burden on system and internet. To work, they have ti stick their nose and fingers in every nook and cranny of OS and communications. Those actions as well as their reporting of everything they find (and who knows what else) all by itself can be considered a threat, if nothing else then at least to privacy. Around here, Kaspersky is offered as free one year subscription by all internet providers and McAfee (unlicensed) in every laptop.
    On the other hand, although it's true that viruses are not developed as much as before (for various reasons), there are still many of them as well as other malware hanging out in the wild included in mainly illicit SW. They didn't disappear, every single malware that ever was is still out there, no doubt about that. Once on internet, always on internet, still holds true. Fire up your windows in VM, download some programs from a torrent site and see any AV light up like a Christmas tree.

    Hi there

    @CountMike

    the number of TV shows and movies I have got from places like TPB must be quite large including the excellent CHERNOBYL series which we won't get here for a while yet -- I'm happy to pay for content but often the only way especially in smaller more out of the way countries is to use those sorts of sites from time to time otherwise one is stuck with some hideous boring Russian satellite political TV with Finnish subtitles !!!!!!!!!! @Kari might enjoy those !!!!-- and can say I have never even had a smidgen of a Virus from these types of torrents -- In any case it's almost impossible to add malware to a music or video file as it simply would show up as a corrupt file and be totally unplayable.

    Pirate software is another issue -- if one is only advocating use of AV software to prevent getting infected when loading Pirate software then people deserve to get infected -- I'm not sure if large scale pirating of Windows etc is actually a problem any more since there are so many ways to get legally free copies and really heavily discounted ones too.

    It's like "Who ever pays the full price for a Sofa" these days.

    Often to use the same idea as a former US President -- it's not the actual fact of getting infected but the fear of infection which causes mass paranoia etc -- and those old Viruses still out on the internet are all noted in WD's database which is updated almost daily.

    While Linux still remains supreme on the security front Windows has improved in this area beyond all recognition and is reasonably secure -- makes Windows 7 look as leaky as a sieve --if you are using W7 then you DO need decent 3rd party AV software - it really isn't necessary on latest builds of W10.

    As long as there are malicious people out there, there will be malware. No doubt about that. I always say that user is best anti-malware. It's like walking over rocky terrain, if you don't watch where you are stepping you're bound to trip. In that case, AV is just a walking stick to help you stay up and even a band-aid but then it's too late.

    Hi,
    Linux has no user base numbers so it's barely worth the effort to exploit lol I wouldn't call that superior by any means

    Yeah, that too but also many distros which shortens user base even more.
