    Hi.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I just installed 1903 on my cheap little 32gb flash memory notebook. It installed fine using a 3.0 flashdrive to help the process as usual since netbook is so low capacity and fu will not install without it. After installing 1903 and having windows remove the old version of windows 10, I have about 8gb of space, which is typical after a feature update on my notebook (which I will be replacing soon since 32b is really too small). Actually, I haven't even done a proper storage clean up yet which will free up more space typically with clean up of update files.

However, i just read that 1903 requires more space than earlier FUs.. 32gb. So how did it install with no issues on my 32gb laptop.. with space to spare?? It even appears to be setting aside reserve space (is that why 1903 is using more space than earlier versions?)

Did it compress everything to make it work?

Added: I don't see any signs of compression but maybe I'm missing it.

I will be replacing this very cheap netbook in near future. In this price range they usually come 32-64gb emmc. Do you think 64gb is enough or should it be 128 minimum? Keep in mind this is just a surf the internet computer with no other demands needed other than to make updates easier (it takes more than 12 hours to feature update with 3.0 usb drive with 32gb flashdrive memory laptop)

Thank you for your suggestions and info.

It does set aside at least 7gb to help in the install and needs 20gb to install. It may have also used some of your flash drive, with win10 anything is possible.

It's possible. Win10 does have a compression feature for drives but I don't know if it's used for / during installs.

I'd go with the 128gb if you can find and afford it.
    Embedded Multimedia Card (eMMC) Storage

Embedded Multimedia Card or eMMC is more affordable and slower Flash-based storage than solid state drives. eMMC is usually found in smartphones and other consumer electronics devices, but it’s used in personal computers, too. In everyday use, performance of eMMC storage is somewhere between speed of HDDs and SSDs. In the PC segment, you can find eMMC soldered onto motherboards of some budget-class notebooks, tablet PCs, and 2-in-1 computers.

eMMC capacity provided by these PCs is either 32GB or 64GB, rarely 128GB. These are quite limited capacities by today’s standards. To make things easier, most of the eMMC-equipped laptops have a memory card slot in which you can insert a memory card (SD or microSD) to expand internal storage capacity. In addition, computer makers often bundle eMMC-based computers with free access to storage on a remote server, popularly known as cloud storage.

As same as SSDs, eMMCs are power-efficient and completely quiet.

Found this little tidbit about reserved storage on How To Geek. Might explain your situation:

"This feature will be enabled automatically on new PCs with Windows 10 version 1903 (that’s the May 2019 Update) pre-installed, along with clean installs of Windows 10 version 1903. If you’re updating from a previous version of Windows 10, Reserved Storage will not be enabled."

    Here's the whole article:

    You're welcome,

Computers are like most purchases, shoot for the Moon if you can afford it. If you don't need it right away let your notebook sit open at the desktop for awhile, 30" or so, the FU's will usually finish some .net binaries and other stuff in order to make itself feel comfortable as it settles in.

I just finished with the 1903 install on my wife's machine took 3hours. her machine is listed in system two of my Specs under My Computers in the lower left corner of my post's. It'll be awhile before I can update her build and version but here it is until then:
    Code:
    v1903 - Build 18362.175
Apologies 'bout some of my vague answers about compression and using the flash drive, there will be remarks 'bout that but that's okay I'm curious about it to.

When I checked storage earlier it was listing reserved storage near the end like shown in a tutorial suggesting it is using reserved space but after checking it again I don't see it under system and reserved. Also, I don't see any windows update cleanup offered on storage cleanup or disk cleanup. So, I do have less space than normal which is around 10gb after an FU and total cleanup. Now i have 7gb with no compression which is workable. Small 11.6 inch laptops over 64gb are very expensive - sometimes many times the cost of less than 128gb - so i think if i update this in near future I'll go with 64gb which is similar in price to 32gb and should make things easier unless I can find a 128gb flash drive or larger regular hard drive for reasonable price. Meanwhile laptop is working fine now. Just thought it wouldn't be possible at all at first when I quickly read new ram requirements of 1903 since it was already stretching it before.

That's correct I have 6.9GB of reserved storage on an old lappy that I did a clean install on but none in one I upgraded. Both have 256GB disks.

You can take a look at my wife's machine in system two, (500gb HDD) that ran $350.00 USD at Office Max a year ago.

Great maybe I'll check around at various stores.. though $350 is almost 4 times what I paid for what I have. But, still reasonable for that large space as long as it is 11.6 inch screen size.

Go to Settings>Storage. Let it build the display. Click on Temporary files. You'll see all that can be cleaned up. Check off what you wish. Caution....your Downloads are there, too.
