We have it all wrong, Faith! They're not Defender Updates at all. They are Security Intelligence, and MS tries to download the latest they have. Hmmmmmmmmm

Once again and just like the fall 2018 update, I have to keep manually checking for updates. It really makes me wonder just what those "windows insiders" actually test and check. I get sick of these so called feature updates that end up being a fail.
FWIW, I noticed yesterday, Windows update didnt check for updates automatically. After noticing that more than 24 hours had gone by without doing the check automatically, I rebooted, went to Services, the WU service was running, but even so, it did not check for updates automatically. After that, I checked manually and it worked. Likely, WU was on ....hold yesterday, maybe is still on hold today. I seen this sort of thing happen before. As is now, I ll have to wait till tomorrow to see if WU does the check automatically.

Why can't they leave Wu alone then if it's taken care of this "Security intelligence"? Seems kind of redundant to have multiple update portals for it, doesn't it? The update log is also slow because of all the entries it lays.

Just my read on it, but I interpret to mean MS DL's it when they deem it worthwhile, and, oh by the way, you can go do it yourself, too.

    Semi-automatic manual.

If you click "check for updates" in that image, does it gather "intelligence" through Wu? And does it create a log trace? It's great to have options, but not on behest of confusion. Microsoft are experts of it, at least to me.

All OS's need to be activated before you can anything other than the base OOBE of the system. So, yes, it does, just like any OS.
Uhmm...I'm not so sure this is entirely true. Windows has a grace period which is long enough that you can try out Windows before making a purchase. Also all insider builds expire way before this grace period and it does not matter if you're activated or not. Finally, the grace period should be reset after each new build upgrade, meaning the "test license" never have time to expire while trying out new insider builds. Only thing you can not do with a non activated Windows, is customize your profile.

I meant all I posted in a general sense. All of what you say is true. But, Windows, the generally accepted public version used by regular users, does need to be activated to do anything meaningful, ongoing and permanent.

That was my interpretation of why the OP asked the question.

    Meanwhile...

I still have one major system that has not been offered 1903 since it was released.
Removed all USB connected peripherals and nothing via a forced WU.

I do know that Microsoft is quietly slipstreaming in additional fixes to the 1903 build.

    Crazy.

I wish Microsoft would tell you what is causing the problem rather than just tell you to wait for them to get around to fixing it.
