I have set up current version in a VM and trying to set up the fast ring to give feedback. Does the VM need to be activated before it will set up a preview?

All OS's need to be activated before you can anything other than the base OOBE of the system. So, yes, it does, just like any OS.

If you have a validated active Win 10 now, it should follow your MS account, like any install. Are you having problems activating this VM? Might be a good idea to start a new help thread in https://www.tenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/

where you can explain in detail and those members most familiar can help. Don't want to see your questions get buried in a News Thread and all jumbled up in here.

Yes, it should check, but I've noticed of late, it's not always accurate.

When I first boot my computer in the morning, open Update & Security, it shows it's checking for updates, but then says I'm up to date. If I then click on Check for Updates, if one's available, it will show up at that time. Not exactly what should be happening.
Well, that in fact IS what is supposed to happen. MS makes a distinction between what it offers during the automatic once-every-approximately-24hrs check, and what it offers when the 'check for updates' button is clicked. Some updates are only offered when that button is clicked, which MS terms 'seeking'. It's been this way for a while now.

And Defender updates, which seem to be on their own semi-random schedule. They seem to be "available" at :40 past the hour, or very shortly thereafter.

In my opinion they should have a scheduler in place for active/inactive time for Windows Update. So instead of it checking for updates closest to that time it last checked (which is often inaccurate, or even fails to check at all), it should check for updates when the system is either inactive or when there's a schedule in place. That's just my opinion though. Regarding Defender updates. Interestingly I've seen updates on it twice a day, and also on days where the auto check for WU didn't kick in. So it's clearly doing updates without WU in some form. Windows is like a poorly trained dog, always shouting and wanting attention, doing its own thing while I am away.

As tomcat said, Defender updates seem to be in their own world.
