One more thought, I'll just throw out. To rule out the possibility there is something preventing any type of version upgrade, if you were to get the ISO for 1809, and do an in-place repair successfully, it would really narrow it down to 1903 not being viable on your box. If 1809 were to upgrade on top of itself ok (in-place), all the mechanisms worked.
I can't update for some reason. Running Win 10 for Workstations (1809, 17763.529). Getting a 0xa0000400 error. Rebooted, cleaned up temporary files, unhooked from my dock (and all USB peripherals), and still won't update. Frustrating!
Advice needed before trying again. Using Windows10Upgrade9252.exe, my computer updated to 1903 with no problems. The last time I looked at the install progress on my wife's computer, it was at 92%, but the next time I looked, I saw the "Your computer has encountered an error"screen, which was collecting information.
When that finished, I shut down and restarted her machine, with just a few very minor problems that were quickly resolved; everything was as it had been, with Version 1809 installed and up-to-date. Event Viewer showed three errors that migh have occurred around the time of the crash. I have no understanding of what they are about, except that they mention using Component Services to fix them, and I vaguely recall seeing something about this in one of the 1903 threads. i did make a screen shot of one of the errors, which I could post here, a process for which the instructions I have forgotten, not having done that for quite some time.
That is all I have, and I don't know how to proceed. I don't want to run the update process again and encounter the same failure, which is why I am seeking advice.

Just wanted you to know you're not alone. First off, let me mention that two of my old systems (one with two different nvidia graphic cards in it) updated with no problems using the USB copied to hard drive method. And not unplugging anything!
But with my good system I have:
- turned off all services (clean boot)
- uninstalled (my third party cards)
- unplugged the internet
- even cloned my M2 drive to an old hard drive and tried to update it.
- cleaned my registry
- updated all my chipset and device drivers
- everything and anything suggested on these and the Microsoft forums
Nothing...it always fails at 75% - BTW I wish the installer would tell you upfront when it's "Checking this PC" instead of waiting.
MS had this great tool when Windows 10 came out that would look at your system and tell you problem programs in plain English (and yes, I've run all the Update Trouble shooters, the SetUpdiag and nothing has pointed to a solution.)
I may try a clean install next but after three days of this I am tired and pretty upset. But if anyone can figure this out, it will be someone on this forum.

Well After getting the 1903 on my newest system through WU on 21st and working great so far. I decided I could not wait because I will be travelling in a few days. I upgraded the other Windows Pro system and the Laptop Windows Home by way of the Assistant. All went well with no flaws. Happy about that. So I am all set until this Fall I guess :)

You are not the only one and my suggestion to you would be to go through this thread to see if something helps. There are a number of suggestions already posted, and while one may work for you, it may not work for someone else with the same fault code. That's the nature of this beast.

I downloaded 1809 V2 iso from HeilDoc. and just placed on the desktop
- uninstalled AV, Malwarebytes, VPN, and Ransom Stopper
- removed the Macrium Boot Menu
- disabled all 3rd party startup apps
- disabled all 3rd party services
- performed clean boot
- mounted the iso and ran setup
- it installed as expected
Performed another reboot
Copied the 1903 iso to the desktop, mounted and ran setup
1903 INSTALLED

After trying many suggestions I combined my normal processes with a final thought from Tomcat and it worked.
That is 3 down and one more just like the last one to go.
