Can't upgrade to 1903 with a USB drive and the update utility.... Really Microsoft???? How long will this take to fix?

Previous updates worked so whats the deal with 1903? Clean install or download the file every time? Come on!

Agree it is a stupid restriction that is going to backfire for those PC's that have SD cards that show up as removable storage. Those computers will be stuck on the October 2018 update indefinitely.

I was saying that kinda tongue in cheek because OEMs are slowly but surely eliminating the DVD drives in machines. My daughter has a Lenovo that's a couple or three years old that has no DVD drive. We had to buy her a "portable" one so she could install Paint Shop Pro and a couple other things.

We have three HP computers at the Senior Activity Center that can't boot from a USB Drive (they're that old), so I had to use a DVD. Now I think I'll be able to mount the ISO and go from there.
Another once often used, important device that has almost bitten the dust.
Between NAS, usb sticks and external ssd, there's really no need anymore.

    it's MS
    - a tad unfortunate that bears some phonetic similarity to 'it's a mess'

Have you tried the Windows Update Assistant? No external anything required. First option:

Yep, and it's not Microsoft's fault either. I think OEMs are jumping the gun on this just to save a couple bucks. Not only are OEMs eliminating DVDs, but they're giving us 32 GB hard drives instead of something usable! I took two HPs back to Office Depot because I couldn't get Windows 10 to update; not enough storage space. I'm probably not the only one who took 'em back either because OD doesn't seem to carry them any more.

I teach Windows 10 to Seniors and can plainly see the need for an adequate hard drive and a DVD drive! Seniors don't have the disposable income of those still in the workforce. I would say NAS is completely out unless I build it with extra parts laying around. Still a hit to the pocket book for the OS. For the same reason, external SSDs are out to. I don't think USB sticks will go out too soon, and they're getting cheaper.

You can mount the ISO from a flash drive, then go from there.

I certainly hope MS isn't so stupid as to have done this on purpose, but I wouldn't feel safe betting either way. I suspect they may have to issue a fix for 1809 before 1903 will get well propagated.

Yes, but one could always use this as a permanent "Feature Update" deferral tool. If you never remove the SD card, Window Update won't be able to do any feature updates.
