Wait a minute! Are you updating now? If so, leave things alone and just wait. If you find you can't, then ok, try wired.
Yes I am. Ok, I will wait.

Yep, my Dell XPS8920 came with a stock SD card reader that shows up by default as a USB drive, with a drive letter assigned, even when empty... go figure.
I remembered having a 16 in one SD card adapter connected to 2 internal USB ports adding 16 drive letters even with no cards inserted. In addition to my 5 or 6 HDDs that made so much mess that I had to replace it with external USB card reader.

Some computers, specially laptops that have card reader are usually connected to USB and report having a letter although no SD card is inserted. That gets reported as an external drive with no data on it. Might be prudent to disable it temporarily in BIOS before trying the upgrade.
What a stupid restriction the May updated added. Many all in ones and laptops do this there is going to be so many failed updates.

I haven't been offered the May 1903 version yet using Windows Update. I'm wondering does MS see something on mine and similar machines that they will wait for a fix, or is it just that they are letting the update become available slowly?

PS is the the chromium browser in the version?

They did say they were throttling the WU process so that they can analyse feedback properly. However there are some blocks. In particular connected external USB drives, flash drives and card readers.
The Chromium based edge is available separately. Microsoft Edge Insider preview builds are now ready for you to try

Answering your specific situation would be very difficult, but in the past MS has taken the approach of the machines "most likely to succeed" will be offered it first. That may sound like some form of Techno-Discrimination, but that's been their policy. Some lose policy, but still in place. And even then, it could take months. If you feel there really is no justifiably reason for not getting it offered yet, you can always do it yourself. MS has the site available just for that purpose.

The first option, Windows Update Assistant, is the simplest method, and very easy to understand. No ISO needed or thumb drives or DVD. Basically click the downloaded small app, and sit back and watch.

First thing to do is to check CPU usage in Task Manager with no other apps open. It's possible Windows is still optimizing everything.

Give Windows some time to complete all its post install processes. Edge should eventually run smoothly. If not, then you may have a real problem.
