Ken, just trying to understand. You said "A clean install is possible from a USB created with MCT" did you mean "A clean install is "NOT" possible.
No, Ken meant exactly what he said. You can (and I have) boot from a usb to do a clean install of 1903. What you can't do is an in-place upgrade from that same usb.

Sorry, you may have misunderstood. In the Disk Cleanup screen, it look like this:

    Example:

    Attachment 235267

Open and Use Disk Cleanup in Windows 10
This is from the Disk Cleanup Tutorial.
Hi Tomcat, there's no reference to "Previous Windows Installation" in the Disk Cleanup tool, see attached screenshots:

I have a pretty old desktop that was born with xp and over the years successfully was updated thru 1809. So now I am going to try 1903 but wanted to use MCT to make a USB flash drive.

I want to start from a fresh formatted SSD no OS.
Mounting an .iso without any OS can't be done????
Looking @ my bios, bootable devices are: Floppy, LS1201, HDD and CD rom ....... a show stopper??
I can do it with a burnt .iso to DVD disk but that's not very exciting??

    Suggestions appreciated...
In my experience with old PCs, Meebers, that's about the only option you have.

You need to click the 'Clean up system files' button shown in your screenshots in order to see 'previous windows installation' listed as an option.

Sorry for my confusion. In my OP, my bios does not have an option to boot from USB and I was looking for alternatives. I have since settled on MCT iso using my DVD player.

Or run Disk Cleanup as administrator to begin with, by right clicking on it and selecting ' Run as administrator '.

I'm not going the way of the Update Assistant.

I used it on 1809 and it hosed two systems. I have everything imaged and ready to go, but let the "AI" at Microsoft do the work this time.
I'll give it another 3 days, then I will need to reach out to my contacts at Redmond for an answer.

I wonder if MS is afraid of another 1809 fiasco.

    Thoughts?
