I don't know if this I'll work but you might give is a try. Since you say you already created a USB drive, copy the contents of the drive to a folder on your desktop somewhere. From that folder, run the exe and see if that works.

I've used the procedure twice - once on a desktop, and just now on my 2017 Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. Both were successful and both systems are updated and running without issue. Credit for this goes to Bree. Worth a shot.

    Good luck.
I just finished doing that and it failed also with the same error as all the other failed attempts.

Dav, there are many people on this forum and many of them may offer other suggestions that might help you get the update. We’re all here for one another—thats What we are all here for. So maybe someone else will read our dialogues and offer a different approach. It’s interesting that some of us have been successful while others of us have had difficulties. Best wishes for successful install soon!

Workable for someone with one or two computers to update. But not for those who have a larger number to update.

I think we should give every alternative available so that the end user has a better understanding of how to get their updates with the least amount of effort and time.
Wynona, with all due respect, you missed my point. When there is no other option, as in the case of the USB failures, Update Assistant is a workable alternative.

Thanks Magilla, I appreciate everyone who has tried to help.

This is Very frustrating. Guess my record is ruined. I have never had an issue that I could not fix, going back to IBM PC Dos, MS-DOS, and Windows from ver 1, 2, 2.1, 3, and on and on until today. In the past I have even fixed things that Microsoft could not fix for me and they ask me how I fixed them.

    Thanks again.

Well, I know it is not hardware related.
When I get a new machine, right out of the box, I install Macrium and perform an image of the original OS and configuration.
I just restored that original image and then removed Mcafee LiveSafe trial that came with it.
Then I went straight to Microsoft download and used the Upgrade Assistant and it worked perfectly.
So, I am restoring to the original image again and checking to see the build and updates that are installed. Then I will restore back to my current image and see if I can uninstall updates to get back to that original configuration and give it another try.

Every way possible many many times. USB Flash, DVD, ISO (wim and esd) from C: and D:, update assistant. Always clean boot with startup and services disabled, AV and Malwarebytes removed and or disabled.
This just caught my eye. What services did you disable?

Ok, that should have been safe. Sorry, had to ask.
