If you haven't read this thread, particularly post#1, good place to start.

What is new for Windows 10 May 2019 Update version 1903
Tomcat, there is A LOT of stuff that is now enabled that was expected. Now rebooting my PC, and getting sandboxed.

Not all that weird - MS said they were going to let it out slowly based on feedback and telemetry. I wasn't getting it through WU either, so I cheated and downloaded it from UUPDump. Upgraded from the resulting ISO, and all is well.
I have Telemetry disabled, does that affect the availability/timing of the Update?

I have a 20MB folder called Windows10Upgrade on my system.
    Also a small folder $GetCurrent.
I used the Update Assistant to update so this must be leftovers from that.

To have a better understanding of what is going behind the scenes while using "Update Assistant" to upgrade to a new version of Windows, I think the following can help:

Behind the scenes, it creates a new folder "Windows10Upgrade" in C:\ drive which contains several files. The Update Assistant starts downloading Windows 10 setup files in form of a .ESD file which is stored in the same "Windows10Upgrade" folder. The file size increases every second as the file is being downloaded by Update Assistant.
But the ESD file is kept in this folder temporarily. As soon as the complete ESD file is downloaded (when the download progress reaches to 80% approx.), the ESD file is extracted to following folder:
    C:\$GetCurrent\Media

Where does Update Assistant Download and Store Windows 10 Setup Files?
    Access Denied

FWIW, on my system the Windows10Upgrade folder was stored on "X:" partition. where it remained.

Yeah!. that is what my quote in previous post said. The windows10Upgrade folder doesn't budge; only the ESD file is extracted to following folder:
    C:\$GetCurrent\Media

    Interesting.
Updated two laptops with Pro edition, both started from 1809.
On one I got the standard abilities to defer updates associated with Pro edition, on the other I got the deferral options of Home.

You are not alone. If you work out how to correct it I know a thread that would be interested in your solution.

    This is nuts...

Still have two systems on 503 (intermediate build) - anyone else not being offered this?
Is 503 required before 1903 (I think so)?

    One other item -

Can I use the 1903 ADK binaries on 1809 to update them or do I have to wait for 1903?

    Thanks!

If 18362.116 (being the latest build, and the 'release' build) was already installed, I'm not sure what you were expecting to happen.
    Let me quote myself:

"I made the error of downloading the .iso and installing it as an upgrade over 18362.116. It turned out to be an upgrade-in-place (not a new build). "

My language might have been clearer. I didn't know that 18362.116 was the release version, or I wouldn't have run the "update". Complete waste of time. I checked this thread, maybe too hastily, to see what the build was of the release version, but I didn't spot it, if it was there.

I doubt that you were deliberately trying to give insult, so I'll chalk it up to a communication problem.

At least you got your system clean without cleaning, In place upgrade is probably best way to have system to it's best.
