My machine hasn't been offered the 1903 update yet. "Supposedly", due to the cumulative update, KB4497934. Feature Updates are no longer installed automatically....

Yes, Feature Updates will no longer be installed automatically - BUT you will still see them appear automatically in Windows Update when it is deemed ready for your machine. The new change is that you then have to ask for it to 'Download and install now'.

...how close does one need to be. Before Microsoft starts to push out a Feature Update to your machine automatically?

About a month or so before the end of support, apparently.

When Windows 10 devices are at, or within several months of reaching, end of service, Windows Update will begin to automatically initiate a feature update.

    Right!
So why all this mess of update options, use of tools and the update catalog etc; to get feature updates?
When the updates will be installed automatically anyway?
If these updates were of the utmost importance, why would these update options be available?
And if these update are indeed important, why didn't they just simply update them, through WU, when they were available back in May?
Perhaps it's the fact, that all these update options are available, which in my opinion is the issue, because if I do nothing to initiate these updates, they will happen anyway?
I guess I don't get, why this thread exists.

If there wasn't right/valid reason not to get update regular way, automatically over WU and that could be proven by forced update, I don't see a reason to wait for MS to decide for me and to keep on wondering whether I'd get them at all or it would screw something up when it does. I wasn't offered 1903 at the beginning although on a modern machine with all certified drivers and very clean system, so I downloaded ISO and installed it manually after a full backup, without a hitch. On same computer I have insider 1903 and it worked fine after normal, WU installation, For me that's proof in the pudding that there was no valid reason I was discriminated against.

I know this is going to sound silly, but my favorite new feature is the ability to start Task Manager in the performance tab.

Not silly at all. That was first tested on Insider build 18305, and made it to the final cut for the Spring release of 1903. Just for reference for all:

I hadn't noticed that - thanks for pointing it out! Yes, seems a small thing, but all the little things add up!

I'm sure it's documented somewhere, but ctrl-shift + 3 (num pad) toggles across all the tabs in Task Manager, left>right. ctrl-shift + 9 toggles right >left. Trivia......
