I am mighty confused (nothing new there!)
I applied this update to one of my test PCs (Win Pro) which WAS on 17763.504

According to the OP, the update "Applies to: Windows 10 version 1809, Windows Server 2019 all versions" so logically it should include mine

Here is my new Winver showing 17763.529
    Cumulative Update KB4497934 Windows 10 v1809 Build 17763.529 - May 21-optiplex-winver.jpg

Next screenshot shows what my "Advanced Options" screen displays to which I wish to point out 2 things:

1 - The updates are (and always were) completely open - ie no deferrals, no pauses, allowed to update immediately - this is a test PC and this is how I set it from "day 1"

2 - This "Advanced Options" screen is identical to how this PC appeared before I started updating and also to how another Pro PC still running on 17763.503 appears. In other words, this update brings about no changes to the Advanced Options as I was expecting from the OP.

    Cumulative Update KB4497934 Windows 10 v1809 Build 17763.529 - May 21-optiplex-advanced-options.jpg

Now, as you can see, I do have some policies set - these are they:
    Cumulative Update KB4497934 Windows 10 v1809 Build 17763.529 - May 21-optiplex-policies.jpg

At the completion of the update (after the Restart) I did a MANUAL "Check for updates", with the expected response of "You're up to date". It pushed no further updates of any kind on me

So I was expecting this new 1903 functionality would now be available in 1809 and clearly it is not.

    Questions therefore seem to be:

Have I misunderstood and are my expectations incorrect?
Am I correct but could my configured polices be interfering with the new functionality?

Yes your expectations were incorrect. There are no changes to the Advanced Options. What has changed will be seen on the main Windows Update page - but only once the Features Update to 1903 is deemed ready for your PC and has been found by windows update. Then, and only then, will the new 'Download and install now' feature back-ported from 1903 come into view.

    HI @Bree - thanks
    Clearly that's what's happening BUT....
KB4497934 applies to 1809 (OS Build OS 17763.529) as it states in the OP.

And if you read the greyed out area of the OP, it states

"Starting with update KB4497934, we are introducing functionality that allows you to decide when to install a feature update........" (My emphasis)

Therefore is it not reasonable to infer that when one installs KB4497934 which is itself a CU for 1809 then that functionality will appear?

I'm quite willing to accept that I've misunderstood, however, is it not ambiguous? Not trying to start a fight here mate but however many times I read the OP, that is how it appears to me.

Yes, the wording could have been clearer. But the practical result is that after KB4497934 has installed you will be able to choose when (or even if) you want a Features update to 'Download and install now'. As I understand it this change will apply to Home as well as Pro.

    Ah....lightbulb moment!
So, what you're saying is that when 1903 is offered to me, this update will kick in and allow me to control it? Until then, it has no effect??

    Exactly!

But you may see it kick in earlier than that. Any C/D release CUs (the ones issued in the 3rd or 4th week of the month) are optional and should be subject to the same 'download and install now' controls.

Yers, when I re-read it alongside your comments, I can see that. So it does work on 1809 as it implies but only when there's something for it to work on...for which I shall now duly wait. Thank you @Bree - you've made a pedantic simpleton very happy.

I'm also one of those who believes that the button to "Download and install now" will be available with some cumulative updates, but this is not confirmed yet, in the blog published some time ago Microsoft only mentions the availability of this button with feature updates, the author of the blog doesn't mention its availability with cumulative updates, the fact that the "Download and install now" button has appeared in version 1903 with a cumulative update could simply be a test that Microsoft wanted to do to verify the operation of this option before introducing it in version 1809, some time ago I had a discussion with someone about that in Reddit:
Version 1903 (build 18362.53) already shows the new button to "Download and install now" the updates (separate from the "check for updates" button). : Windows10

But, I repeat, I'm also one of those who believes that the "Download and install now" button will also appear with some cumulative updates but we will have to wait to confirm it.

So do I. It has long been a puzzle that if you set a non-zero number of days for 'defer features updates' you cannot find the C/D release CUs by checking for updates. The theory goes that these optional C/D updates are classed as 'features updates' in order to distinguish them from Patch Tuesday mandatory updates. I quoted f14tomcat and expanded on that theory here...
Please explain this to me, lol - KB4497934 - crazy.

...whatever, we should know for sure once the next C/D release comes along.

Supporting evidence that this may very well apply to the C/D release CUs came from Microsoft here (my bold).

    Microsoft said:
...we are introducing new features that provide additional clarity and control over the update experience, both for feature updates and optional monthly non-security updates.

Just curious how would I go about updating to the 1903 build? I'm on the latest 1809 build.
