Does anyone know/understand why these are not delivered through Windows Update? If these are necessary or recommended and are safe to employ, then wouldn't one expect the delivery mechanism to utilize Windows Update?

It would seem a manual download and install is, IMHO, unlikely to be used by the overwhelming majority of average Windows users across the world. Thus meaning that the mitigation is likely to be unused by the majority of users...

    Hi,
    Depends on update settings
If you only set to get updates from ms then you might wait a little longer
If your set to get from others on the internet and likely send updates to others on the internet one might get updates a little sooner maybe.

But you'll also be deemed a ms server too and your internet band width and computer resources will be used up a little for that pleasure.

End result is be patient nobody has ever died by not having an update 2-7... days after it's released.
Matter of fact sometimes these updates are recalled because of a lot of bugs and sometime serious bugs.
    So count yourself lucky

My understanding is your CPU must be on the matrix list outlined at the top of the KB post.

The CPU is detectable by Windows...hence, any update can be evaluated by Windows Update just like any other hardware or software update...or am I missing something...?

Assume, for the sake of discussion, that the "user" did need to determine their CPU and then select the appropriate download. Would this not make the case even more clearly that the majority of users would not - or could not - perform this operation? Thus, again IMHO, making a manual delivery mechanism even less desirable?

Oh, I agree. I'm not certain how WU does it it, but if the CPU detected is not applicable, as pietcorus2 stated for his, then it won't be offered. Don't think there's anything manual anybody would need to do.

It will be delivered through Windows Update eventually. Microsoft is just being extra cautious. The two previous microcode updates were both eventually delivered through Windows Update.
