Thanks Dimitri,
I will be checking out the blog you pointed to and I understand and agree with what you said, looks like I better stock up on the acetylsalicylic acid.
Being a Gateway / now Acer machine I found this on Acer's site awhile back: Intel Security Vulnerabilities Regarding Intel® Management Engine (ME) It does have 'some' Gateway's listed but that's the same list I saw over a year ago, but I'll check some more and see if there are any fresher leads.
When you said:Does that mean my machine is 'somewhat' safe?Your system has a BIOS microcode version which is older than the one Microsoft has updated your system with. That's why Windows chose to run the Microsoft provided microcode. This microcode will be loaded at system boot and will be unloaded at shutdown.
Sorry, for the late answer Steve but being a little busy with work lately.
Yes that's what I mean.
Since I don't believe that ACER will provide an updated BIOS for your machine, keep updating your microcode by applying the latest MS update. This will ensure that you're at least as safe as any of us, regardless of the source of the microcode (i.e. PC vendor BIOS update or Microsoft update).
Downloads for KB4497165 have been updated on March 10, 2020. See first post for more details.
