Too many people just rely totally on Anti Virus Software rather than using "Brain" !!!! Currently things like malware and viruses are really not much of a problem -- but scams where there's money to be made are getting more sophisticated and big business -- it's virtually impossible to use any sort of anti virus software to defend against these as they are not malware or viruses in any sense of the word.
What usually happens is that people are tricked into giving away personal data e.g credit card details / bank account numbers, passwords etc or directed to "look alike websites" where money or whatever is transferred to rogue operators. Other scams are links in emails - so never even think of opening an email if you don't know the sender - just delete it - fake Airbnb / other e-commerce "look alike" sites , ransomware demands and so on.
These scams have one purpose only -- to separate you from your money. Old school hacking is so last century (C20) these days --- WD is good enough as the OS is robust enough now to handle the odd bit of malware you *might* get -- however even if you use the old notorious torrent places like TPB you are very unlikely to end up with an infected computer. People aren't really interested in hacking old "Mom and Pop" machines but definitely are interested in making "a quick buck or two".
I think in every classroom on the planet as soon as kids can learn to use computers there should be comprehensive lessons on how to spot and avoid scams. It's sad to read often how even well educated adults have lost many 000's of EUR, USD, GBP etc on easily avoided scams.
Current versions of W10 (19H1 and 20H1) particularly are more than adequately defended against viruses and malware --- protecting yourself against being scammed is a much more important task !!!!
