What shadows? I don't ever remember any with Windows 10 (8 or 8.1 either). I remember problems with XP but nothing with later Windows versions. Must be tied to specific hardware or drivers. I would not expect a hard drive to have any effect, has to be video related.

Can you post a screen capture showing it? Is it the same problem we had with XP?
On my desktop the Icons have a light shadow at the bottom.

    I don't have any shadows.

I have a EVGA GeForce GTX 750 connected to a Samsung C27F398 27" Curved Monitor at resolution 1920x1080 via HDMI. I've also used DVI though never VGA and never had icon shadows.

How do you turn it off when it appears?

    Anyone else seeing this?

Desktop icons shadow isn't a bug, you can add/remove it

Right click This PC -> choose properties -> Advanced System Settings -> click settings in performance -> in Visual Effects settings, choose custom -> deselect or select Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop, and then tap OK

That's the Icon text/label. Same thing as Drop Shadow back ln XP. I thought this was an actual shadow under the icon itself. That's why it's good to have a picture, no ambiguity.

Got a Subscription Update from Lenovo recently: How to activate the hidden "Slide to shut down" feature

I've never heard of it before and don't see a Brink tutorial on it.

Thanks. How the heck did I miss that one. I did a search again and it popped right up.

    That's ironic!
In that link it says "So, now you’ll be able to pause both feature and monthly updates for up to 35 days (seven days at a time, up to five times). "
And yet the problem whereby Feature Update deferral disappears the first time you use it, remains unfixed!
