I couldn't wait, so just put myself into the preview ring for a while.

    Hi folks

I don't think it will be released until certainly the VMWare issues have been fixed -- as previously posted by a number of users :

When using VMware as a HOST any VM running on it whether another version of Windows or a Linux OS freeze when you try and attach an external USB drive and you have to re-boot the host.

BTW on 20H1 the host just does a complete GSOD so no improvement there.

That said currently HYPER-V VM's work fine if you can accept the limitation when using non Windows VM's -- for full screen / re-sizeable windows you will need to connect to the VM via RDP rather than the connect mechanism in HYPER-V after starting the VM, sound won't normally work and anything other than USB HDD's / Thumbdrives and SSD's can't be attached -- so no phones, kindles etc. Video and passthru is fine in enhanced mode for Windows VM's but not AFAIK for non Windows VM's.

Note also you need to have Win10 PRO or Enterprise to use HYPER-V (not sure about W10 Workstation and education editions as I haven't tried those).

For those who want to try the release out as has often been said on the Forum you can get it in its current state from UUPDUMP. You don't have to join insider etc.

    Cheers

I seriously doubt MS would hold up 1903 because of VMWARE issues. That is a 3rd party hypervisor so will be low priority to fix - they will blame VMWARE anyway saying it is up to them to update.

    Hi there
seems a total lack of movement on the part of VMWare looking at the VMWare user Forums

Well I'm sure I'm not the only one -- I can live with the limitations of HYPER-V for running Linux VM's on a laptop so that's another customer gone !!!!.

W10 1903 (this one) and the 20H1 are looking good enough so far - especially on laptops and for running Windows VM's on my Linux desktops I'm investigating using KVM / ESXI / XEN

ESXI looks interesting but I want to move away from VMWare -- however Esxi is such a tiny OS that there's nothing in it to break !!!!.

I don't like Oracle's VBOX at all -- somehow me and it don't get on -- I know others like it but I've come to grief with it several times -- at least HYPER-V doesn't seem to break easily !!!!

    Cheers

Triple boot - Win 10 Pro, Win 10 Pro Insider (2) - (and a sprinkling of VMs)

It is very, very odd that VMWare running in 1903 will run an 1809, a 20h1(any flavor), but will not even attempt to run itself, not even a clean VM install from a 18362.86 ISO. Never makes it past attempted boot. Lovely blank screen. Reboot 1903 and move on.

Well! Maybe a fix, least here. I did an in-place repair on my Release Preview with a full 18362.86 ISO from UUP Dump, and afterward, the Release Preview guest would boot and play nice under VMWare host running under RP. No more hanging black screen that required an RP reboot to clear. Did it several times to verify. If I recall, there were some hanging and crashing issues with Sandbox when it was first thrown out, and a few builds/cu's to get it straight. I know, Sandbox has no direct relationship to VMWare, except the common thread of a "virtualized" world. It's not and never was enabled on my RP. I just think that there may have been bits and nibbles left over that were making VMWare sick. All I can say is, it was very busted before, and very ok now, after the in-place repair. I hope it sticks.

Doesn't address any USB issues like Jimbo has, but at least it's running now like it should.

I agree, 1903 won't be held up for any VMWare issues. I do hope they get fixed, but not a show stopper.

Well I hope VMWare is not holding up the GA release - in the old days an RC was distributed to OEM's and Vendors for sign-off - now Goodness knows what tangled web is being weaved. As usual MS stays mum. I wish they were more professional in their dealings with their customers. One can only guess mis-management of the whole process.

    Hi there
    @f14tomcat

currently on 1903 (this build) and have got a decent test Linux VM now with HYPER-V including adding Native (physical) disk drives --make offline to Windows first then I've got here a 4TB linux formatted external HDD (music files etc) which can also be shared over the LAN and of course the HOST.

The only issues I have with HYPER-V I have with this are 1) No sound -- not really important, and 2) can't add non HDD type USB devices so things like phones, cameras and kindles can't be connected. Not a major issue when I'm using a laptop. I use The Gimp quite a bit on Linux at home. The GIMP works fine but I can't connect the camera to the VM !!!!

I was surprised but testing SQUID (linux proxy server) also works in the VM but still need to get postfix / sendmail to work.

That might raise the question of who is signing off to whom? A tangled web indeed.
