    ThinkPad A485/E585/E485

This makes me wonder, are you on the latest BIOS? I think 1.38 is the latest one for your model. I am well aware these AMD Thinkpads has had a rough start with flakey firmware, but has gotten better over time.
Like I said, you'll have to work a little.

-BIOS was updated to 1.52 (April 8) last week. Did not have any issues there. E585
-Secure boot needs attention on mainline Kernel (.deb packages/MOK Manager). No WIFI with Secure Boot enabled below Kernel 4.18.x =MOK Manager again.
-Lenovo AMD UI is outdated and only 19.2.3 will install (Express Upgrade after to the latest). Don't know if will override version 17?
-Never used the original HDD, switch to a brand new SSD. Back cassing is very easy to open.
-The Dolby EQ app is fragile, you may lose it with VMware. App available at Win store.
-You may have to delete wireless driver in Device Manager and reboot to get it if icon is red. One shot solution after a clean install.
-Keyboard bug is also present in A485, more stable in Ten and Tumbleweed is the worst place to be = out of control.
-Tumbleweed KDE is the strongest WIFI architecture followed by Mint Tessa.

-Bootline example for Mate 19.04 April 16th Build

Tweaked in Win Ten with WordPad or NotePad++>MATE ISO Image>boot>grub>grub.cfg>Linux Line For Try Mate+>Linux Line For Install Mate>Save and exit. Nomodeset does not apply to our graphic card=Won't work. In Mint 19.1, only Compatibility Mode can be tweak.

This tweak is permanent and will migrate in Grub. The same can be done in the Grub terminal = <<e>> terminal at boot time. Save & exit there is CRTL + x. You need to add a space at the end of the line. Tweak also migrates in Grub.

Firmware Bug Permanent Tweak In Mate 19.04 April 16th Build Ubiquity Hotfix

    "Try Ubuntu MATE without installing"
    Code:
    linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-mate.seed boot=casper quiet splash --- iommu=soft
    "Install Ubuntu MATE"
    Code:
    linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-mate.seed boot=casper only-ubiquity quiet splash --- iommu=soft
<<iommu=soft>> is the only bootline argument that works after Kernel 4.19. Don't waste your time will all others ivrs_arguments for the Kernel parameter or bootline. If you don't tweak the bootline, all Linux ISO images will end in a black screen.

    Good luck,

Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.2.3 | AMD

    Alright!

Got myself a ThinkPad A485 with R7 Pro 2700U CPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of NVMe storage. Upgraded straight from Windows v1709 to 1903 and this latest patch without any glithes. Also updated to latest BIOS/UEFI. Haven't touched any device drivers at all. Everything is running remarkably well so far. Gosh I love this new device. Completely from a different planet compared to all my Asus devices I've been using so far.

Next I'll install Office365 and Visual Studio 2019 CE, and that's when things usually starts to fall apart.

    Thanks @MikeMecanic

I'm not gonna go for Linux at the moment. Maybe later when I add a second NVMe drive. But right now I'll stick with Windows because that is where I'll be doing all my work.

Indeed, it is a quad core. Ubuntu 19.04 fresh install takes less than 3 minutes, Ten about 10. I thought you were buying E485, didn't know about A485. Only have 8Gig of RAM and not enough for Sandbox or VMware. Let me know if Sandbox streaming is stable and RAM usage with 16.

I ran Sandbox without issues on my Asus U46SV on a Hyper-V VM with only 4GB dedicated RAM and nested virtualization enabled.
Should run really well on a system with 8GB and most definitely with 16GB.

I still have so much to setup that I'll take those more low priority things like Sandbox a bit later. But I'll keep you informed once I test it out.

this update just installed to me again. went super fast and did not ask reboot. build number did not change. I wonder what is causing these reinstalls of already succesfully installed updates.

Why don't you get one from UUPdump?

    @MikeMecanic

I just tested out Sandbox. I even used Windows built in Game Tools to capture a short video clip of it. No issues at all. What would you like for me to test?

VS 2019 CE, SQL Server 2017, Hyper-V, Office365, WSL and Sandbox are running really well. I even installed latest AMD Adrenalin drivers. No other issues, except for some odd reason the performance monitoring tools does not report any GPU usage. Windows Task Manager can read utilization just fine though.

I think someone said in the comments that the app crash bug is in the UUPdump?
