    Hi,

after installing this update, PPTP and L2TP stopped working. After uninstall, everything works ok again. Anyone noticed that?

When this update is installed, windows stop responding to the config-request from the server.

I really hope this gets addressed before it goes to some nonuninstallable update..

Nothing here but then I don't use vpn (virtual private network). I did see where 3509 can interfere with vpn but it's lost in the early part of this thread and others.

Check this search link for three threads, scroll to the bottom to see three results here in TenForums.

Anak, thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything useful in those threads. I see now that update is installed again and restart is pending.. This is very bad for me, If my VPN connections does not work I cannot work at all.

Is there a way to report this to MS ? I'm really surprised no one noticed this.

Also, I had hyper-v installed and since some update - maybe exactly this one - after every restart it has "default gateway cannot be reached" - which was solved by running the troubleshooter, which resets the hyperv bridge adapter. Since I cannot allow to loose connection to this workstation, I've uninstalled hyper-v, installed virtualbox and migrated all the VMs.

These are really heavy stuff, completely ruining workflow and everything. I'am really disappointed and already thinking about installing win7 or win8. I cannot risk loosing god knows what with every new update, none of which I can control in any way..industry had really gone rogue..

You're welcome, and I forgot; Hi sadwinuser, Welcome to 10F!

It would help if you can fill in a bit more of your system specs like OS build and version like I have in my side bar i.e. Home, Pro, Enterprise, 64bit? | v1809? | Build - 17763.437? Are you in/on any rings or channels?

If you have any version higher than Home you can slow down but not stop Updates Here's one in Tutorials. Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10
If you go to this page: https://www.tenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/ Click where it says 'Windows Update Tutorials' there at the top then scroll down a bit to see all update tutorials.

They may give you time to figure out how you want or need to go with the updates.

Is there a way to report this to MS ?
I believe most members are using this: Send feedback to Microsoft with Feedback Hub. Applies to: Windows 10

It's a little early but hang in there, there are some top-notch members here that can help you better than I can with these darn updates.

Additional info on first line - IKEv2 vpn also stopped working - NO VPN works after this update! None of my numerous connections.

Anak, again thank you for such a great answer.

I've entered the system specs, hope it's ok. It's a regular win10 pro installed by my company. No rings or channels afaik.

For now, I've uninstalled this update again and disabled Windows Update service. I will write some script or scheduled task to keep it that way. I couldn't care less for updates like this.

Thank you again for all your effort, I will try to submit some feedback through that Hub..

Whatever MS did I have a feeling it relates to this:
    • Security updates to Windows Datacenter Networking, Windows Server, the Microsoft JET Database Engine, Windows Kernel, Windows Input and Composition, Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Virtualization, Windows MSXML, Windows SQL components, and Microsoft Edge.

Middle of Improvements and fixes in Brink's #1 post
So the update doesn't like the security used in your vpn's (PPTP and L2TP)

In your first post it sounded as if this was your company or small business and you were doing the IT work but in your last post it sounds as if 'my company' is a bigger entity. Which way is it? because if it's 'my company' you should let 'their' IT dept. handle this.

Meanwhile I found two area's you can look into:
    • Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features and open 'turn features on or off' there in the left panel. Scroll down to near the bottom, is your 'virtual machine platform' checked? Mine isn't but then I'm not using vpn, you may need it for yours if using any vpn, idk.
    • See this link to see if you've missed anything obvious: Windows 10 PPTP/L2TP/SSTP/IKEv2 VPN Autoconnect Setup Tutorial

System Specs are fine for now, no offense to you but new members don't understand how critical basic information can be to us ol' timers. We look for it and when it isn't there we have to ask, believe me, it is a time saver.
We wish we had a 'that was easy or fix-it button' but it just doesn't work that way deciphering computer problems. It takes time.

This thread seems to have gotten a little long in the tooth - if you don't get any response it may be time to start a new thread addressing this issue in Updates or in Networking.

after installing this update, PPTP and L2TP stopped working. After uninstall, everything works ok again. Anyone noticed that?

Tested right now, w10 1809 client -> srv2012r2 fully patched vpn server, pptp for simplicity, everything works fine before and after installing kb4493509. What is error code from event log? There should be some warnings at vpn server too.

Seems like some hidden network misconfiguration or maybe influence of virtualbox networks in conjunction with that update; troubleshooting may be difficult.

When this update is installed, windows stop responding to the config-request from the server.

    What this means exactly?

Sorry, but I stand by what I said. I run Windows 10 Pro because I like to tinker and because I spend a lot of time here trying to help people so need to be able to try things. I guess in a way that could be seen as wanting full control over as many functions as possible, but not for the reasons you mean I don't think.
@muchomurka has his needs and meets them, that's great. When I looked at what he posted, I did not, and still do not, understand what he meant by most of them:

    - no way to stop download definitions (even if winupdate is disabled)
Why would you want to do this? I want definitions to be as current as possible, no matter what AV I use
    - no way to set download cadency
If this means control when definitions are downloaded, again, why, latest is best.
    - nonfunctional exceptions
    Don't know what this means
    - zero control over file types & archives
    Don't know what this means
    - no way to set proxy
Don't know what this means either
    - no way to download definitions from local storage
True, though Enterprise may have this capability.
    - no password protection
    Of what, for what?

I'm beating a dead horse here, sorry. muchomurka, I'm not trying to start an argument, really. I sometimes get hung up on trying to understand why when I should just let things go. If this has annoyed you, my apologies.

    @Ztruker

I'm with you on this one. WD is perfectly fine although it could have a bit more user defined fine grained control. IMO that's the whole beauty of it. Simplicity that you just set and forget.
