Putting aside that I find it a bit silly to have to disable/uninstall AV in 2019 in order to perform system update successfully. Don't even mention this to corporate users & businesses.
And I find it silly that people need to install 3rd party AV programs, you know, in 2019.

Of necessity, AV programs need tentacles deep in the innermost recesses of the OS. It is no wonder that they break updates.

Actually me too! I would entirely do without Windows Defender for that matter...

Never understood why Windows OS needs AV so much that Microsoft even decided to incorporate it within...

Avira pro. Been on and off computer today. Activity log shows several automatic Avira updates today - probably more than any usual virus update. Further, on re-reboot c drive on SSD scan/repair activated automatically - so maybe, just maybe Avira have a fix. I'll let you know next time I'm on - likely tomorrow. But I ain't holding my breath No microsoft updates.
Avira is definitely still not cooperating with the KB. Problems still exist after the latest update (15.0.45.1165). What is very odd to me is that MS has stated that this problem is fixed, but they also only confirm that there were ever any issues with Win10 and users of ArcaBit antivirus (who?). They have also stated that only Windows 7, 8.1, and Server versions have issues with Avira, Avast, Sophos, etc. Both of these MS statements are completely inaccurate, as plenty of people both here and elsewhere can attest to otherwise.

I've tried a completely clean install as per a request from Avira, both before installing kb4493509 & also after. Neither way makes any difference. Slow boot and random hard locks ups still happening with the kb installed alongside Avira.

MS is wrong. it is not completely fixed with Avira.
MS, on the other hand, updated MS support article 4493509 to indicate the problem is fixed only between KB4493509 and ArcaBit as ArcaBit offered a new update for it.

also this recent Computerworld article came out (which also mentions KB4493509 for Win10 v1809):
Win7/8.1/Server patch conflicts abated, somewhat, but it’s still too early to install the April crop | Computerworld

plus that Avira support article that previously mentioned about the problems has been yanked from their web site as it now produces a 404 not found message

edit: so far only Avast and ArcaBit (and maybe Sophos) have pushed new updates to work with the KB4493509 update but other antivirus vendors (like Avira) are still working on their fixes.

And MalwareBytes and Defender work fine. No fixes needed, cause they didn't break anything. May be others that are ok, too.

This. All of it. Thank you. I'm glad that yourself and some other people actually understand. :)

3rd party AV tends to be more powerful and configurable than Windows Defender and can be monitored better in a corporate environment.

I'd been reading some recent comments on this Avira answers page:

    https://answers.avira.com/en/questio...te-win10-82695

two program updates so far from Avira (v15.0.45.1154 & v15.0.45.1165) and still these new versions have not resolve the problems with the KB4493509 update

two strikes on Avira - if one more new update from avira doesn't work with KB4493509, I'd uninstall avira and switch to another AV

some info from @askavira i've found from April 11th.
@askavira Hi. I had 2 Windows 10 updates for Version 1083 for x64-based systems yesterday (KB4493464 and KB4346084) which installed successfully. However last night Avira feature update made my pc freeze and I had to shutdown. Task manager now shows Avira 32-bit. Is this normal?Anytime Richard! As soon as the fix is released from our side it will be downloaded and installed without any interaction from you. So if you feel more comfortable with a wait and a cold beer - grab one! Have a nice day ahead. It seems that this is not just based on the KB4493509 update, so both teams are figuring out why this issue occurs in combination with our (and other AV vendors) updates. We're updating our KB regularly so please have a look there as well.Well at the moment - while our dev. dept. as well as Microsoft is investigating this case - we don't know if the auto-update feature is also suffering based on this bug. We hope to find a solution asap.Well we've identified a bug between Avira and the latest Microsoft Update which forces this behavior: Knowledgebase for Home … Our dev. dept. is working on a solution.

KB4493509 is the one for v1809. the guy asking the question had the earlier version of Windows 10. so the bug is in that version too.
