If you have an M$ account you already have an inbuilt full system backup.
Which you can gain access to on any computer anywhere on this planet.
How do I access a computer dead because disk is gone or buggered up ?

Download the latest ISA and sign in to your account.

Change the faulty disc or SSD.....remember that your computer is recognised by M$ by its motherboard.

    3. Just like before, the update disables System Protection on all drives...

Number 3 really irritating. I use system restore and dislike that MS doesn't respect a users settings! This thing should be on by default if anything

There must be something more to it than just a blanket 'OFF' switch. I have upgraded most of my machines to 1903 now. Before the upgrade some had their System Protection turned on, others had it turned off. In each case System Protection remained set as it was before the upgrade.

Same thing with me...to be honest System Restore has never been turned off in any FU, as far as I remember!

So I have all backed up where, One drive that can take 10% of my data and days to download ? No thanks, with my backup disk I'm back in business in 15 minutes.

Yes, there must be other factors at play. Not having had it turned off on my machines I haven't any means to explore what they may be...

I do have my own list of 'things that get reset' though.

    1. Turned on auto Defrag for all drives. (I like it turned off)
    2. Turned back on Password Protected Sharing (I keep it turned off)
    3. Turned off details pane in File Explorer.
    4. File copy reset to 'fewer details'
    5. Task Manager reset to 'fewer details'

I also have the problem with (2), (5) ---which I change, like you do--- and I should also add, setting PhotoViewer as default viewer for jpg and png files, which gets lost after each FU.

I usually have to reset Photo Viewer as default for jpg & png too, but 1903 was the first FU that didn't reset mine to Photos. Turning off Fast Startup after it was re-enabled (I like it turned off) was another routine chore, but that one seemed to stop being reset from 1803 onwards.
